Hi All,

I posted this yesterday on the 40 series forum and was adviced to post here since this forum has more dielsel presense.

My question:

How do I decide whether and when I need to do a valave adjustment on my B diesel?

Some history & Facts: I got it second hand. do not know the mileage. Put it in truck about an year back. Put a new head gasket & Adjusted the valves at that point. Had done about 9000KM since then.

Fuel mileage around 12 KM per Liter high way around 10.5 city.
No smoke what so ever when warmed up. (slight smoke when cold)
If you heat it for around 30 - 45 secs.(outside temp 29C) starts on 3rd or 4th cycle.
Stock gauge takes about 5 seconds to reach the stable oil pressure at startup. Needs about 1/2 liter of oil(15W-40) for 3000KMs to keep the level at full mark on the dip-stick

Why I'm thinking of valves

(1) I feel that it is not as smooth as my friend's B diesel
(2) I feel that it is bit noisier than my frind's B diesel
(3) I like it to start at the first cycle(or 1/2 cycle) as my friend's B does.

did you check the rockers for wear?
did you check to make sure the glow plugs are working properly?

run a litre of tranny fluid in the engien for about a 100 km (bit more bit less) to clean up the oil passages.
then check the rockers for groves and if present then get them resurfaced flat.
adjust the rockers again once the engine is warmed up.

cheers

Thanks Wyne I'll check the rockers.

When I say "starts on 3rd or 4th cycle" I did not mean to say that i need to go through 3-4 glow cycles. What happen is if I glow it fro 30-45 sec. and turn the key, the engine truns 3-4 cycles before firing up (click->trun->turn->turn->start)where as my friends B fires up as soon as the key is turned and the engine turn 1 or even 1/2 turn(click->start)

Mithila,
welcome to the international board. you are international so come here.
what vehicle is the B installed in? BJ40?

I have been to Colombo. Spent a few days there in 2000. Beautiful country. I travelled to the up country.

It was just a hop away from were I was living in the Maldives. Many of my friends were Sri Lankans.

Cheers.

The Maldives? Were you working for ken Borek or one of those outfits with the twin otters?

apologise for the hijack.

Hay brownbear,

Nice to hear from someone close to home.

What I got is a 1984 BJ43. Want to see some pics of srilanka to refresh your memories?. Try my pictures online at

Ah beautiful. Can still taste the Arrack!!!!!

I spent time in Negombo at a friends house.

Its been a couple yrs since I was in the Maldives. I miss the people and the weather. I do not miss the work........Too much of it.

I looked after the maintenance on 18 seaplanes. With mucho help of course.

Many of my technicians were ex miltary from Sri Lanka. Good fellows.

Nice pictures! Really like that version of the J4 series!

Great looking vehicle, I just purchased a BJ40 that I will be rebuilding when I return home.
Would love to hear anything good or bad you found with the B engine.

I'm quite happy with the performance of the engine. It produce enough power for my conditions.

I'm using this truck to get around in variuos national parks and remote areas in Srilanka. Mostly unpaved rough dirt tracks with occassional mud, sand and water. I do not do any seriuos 4X4 stuff. You'll probably need more power(3B+turbo or 13BT) if you are to do serious mud, rock, sand stuff. People in the list will be able to shed more light on these engines.

It cruises at 80KMPH effortless with six people inside(note that my truck is bit longer than a 40). Torque at low RPM is superb(I got H41 too). Excellant fuel mileage. Has been very faithful during the 13months & 9000Kms I did with it. The only complaints I have are the things listed in my original post. Even those seems to be specific to my engine not to the B series.

Don't know anyone who was, but while I lived in calgary, I looked very seriously into the AME biz. I'm still a big fan of the Otters and Beavers.
