I was just wondering if any on you have done any wheeling in the Hannagan Meadow, Alpine areas? I was thinking of making a weekend trip out there to escape the heat. I was looking at FR 212, but wanted something with a little interesting wheeling, ie not a gravel road. I have done some backpacking in the area but nothing on 4 wheels. thanks for the input

Been there done that.

Is follows the San Francisco river and you cross the water a lot, sometimes the trail is hard to find. It is very remote and lots of wild life. Make sure your tank is full. I did it solo but it is not the place you want to have problems alone. It was a very cool area and you will use 4WD and possibly your snorkel.:flipoff2:

Phil, are you wearing a speedo...thats just nasty :ban:

Are those your boys hangin out down there? Holy $#!+... you're white.

I've done some light 4wheeling in the area, most notably along the Black River on both the San Carlos and White Mountain side.

There are several trails leading down to the river. Wooden Crossing (San Carlos side) and Georges Basin (just past Fort Apache on the White Mountain Reservation on the main dirt road). Black River Fishing and Camping guide is a great resource for the area, pick it up if you decide to go exploring around the river. Upstream, into the higher elevations closer to Hanagan Meadows is an access road just east of Pacheta Cr. where it empties into the Black River. Depending on conditions and logging situations it can a fun trip, it ends high above the Black River canyon. Bring your fishin' pole if your anywhere near the river ;)

The roads in the higher elevations in the area change frequently with the logging that is continuously going on. Make sure to have the correct permits for the areas you will be in, especially if staying overnight or fishing.

Brian

Edit - I will see if I can round up a few pics of the trails...dont expect much in terms of difficulty in the pines, down in the lower elevations some of the roads can be much more adventurous especially in late July/August during monsoon season.

FR212 looks like a fun trip...similiar to a trip I saw posted on wheelingarizona down on the san francisco river.

Man Phil warn us when you are going to post up stuff like that.

But really, Thanks for all the input!! I will have to try that 212 trip and then tool around in the high country, I am planning on heading up in the next month for a weekend trip. My wife wants to take me up there for fathers day (late) for a little RR and wheeling, can't beat that!!
