One tricky place.

This place has two lawers of metal with a reinforcing place underneath. Needless to say it's a perfect, hidden and quiet place for rust buildup

Once you know what you're cutting, why, and how you are going to repair its time to break the grinder out :grinpimp:

This place is a true PITA. The body mounts might be repaired in a couple years when I take the whole tub off.

Denis, really liking the tube idea................

Looking good man, I know the feeling after cutting into a mess like that and having to make everthing from scratch.

Once spent 12 hrs on two wheel arches, threw them away and built the next set in 3hrs, fit just fine.

The tube idea is great, eliminates the lip, adds a great deal of strength to both the panels and inner wheel well.

yeah I'm pretty proud of it.
On the previous LJ I had welded both panels straight together, maybe a bit less work but the angle was a bit sharp. The new method might be the ultimate fix for 70 series fenders :D
BTW its not tube it's a 14mm solid rod :)

Uh, is your truck on fire in that last picture? Did you figure it out before or after you grabbed the camera? :D

Wow, I'm glad there's Aqualu and Gozzard for 40 series wimps like me... :princess:

This makes me feel much better about my CDM BJ42, which for Cali standards is pretty bad but for Canadian standards a real gem.

Awesome work, love the detail.

nice man, nice

She's and old tired girl, the more love you give her the more she'll be able to give back! I am going through my rusty CDN spec slowly, it has a fresh paint job, I hate finding bondo. I gotta get myself a mig, I can't wait to see more pics.

cheers

i love the "heat treated" metal work...
;^)

congrates on sticking with the old girl... she will look good when it is done...

Thanks for the kind words :D
I think I will keep this truck for quite some time; its a neat little beast and I have great plans for her :)
I'm spending an awful lot of time on this, but the end result shouhld be worth it.

After a bit of grinding I'm getting there :D

I will leave the rockers alone for now since I have too many other things on the backburner. In the future I'll also have to fix or change the rear doors and pull the LHS window to fix a bad rust spot. It will be good enough for now, and a lot better than 10 days ago :D

Next mods for this truck are a lot more fun : snorkel, electric lockers, PTO winch, bumpers, cage, rear storage and maybe a bit of engine tuning :grinpimp:
The road is long

Loooking real good, whats welding without a little fire to cook some marshmellows.

almost done

So I'm almost done with this part, I put a small bit of filler on the sharpest edges and emptied the rest of some old rattle cans I had lying around. Only one of them was the right tone but there was almost nothing left in it. It's not going to be pretty, show condition yet anyway :flipoff2:
I left the rockers undone, filled the hole with foam, I will replace them altogether in a couple months anyway.

I Also had to build a new fuel pickup, the pipes on both I had were rotten beyond repair.
This is the first attempt, it crapped out because I couldn't get the pipes that come out flat enough to fit between the tank and the floor. The second attempt is not as pretty but should work fine. 100% SS :grinpimp:

Today I'm putting everything back together and the truck should be back on the road.

truck is back on the road :) I had some more issues with the fuel system, 4 rusted screws on the fuel pickup cover broke on the newer tank, as well as the RHS bolt that tensions the tank retaining strap :o

I also spliced the rear harness to route it all inside except for the fuel gauge. I will have to lengthen it and move it up into the C pillar, above the doors then down the LHS when I rework the electricals. For now it will stay on the floor under the carpet :D
