Eeeeexcellent! Keep 'em coming guys.

At least now I know that my 11-12 is fairly normal.

I'm contemplating Downey's computerized fuel injection conversion if California ever says I'm smog-exempt, or I can convince a referee it's a cleaner way to go. Some say 30 years old (NEXT YEAR!) others say I'm on the wrong side of the "Screwed!" threshold.

From the replies, it seems that 5-speeds / overdrives are often discussed but seldom installed.

Hi All:

Getting "good" fuel mileage with a 40 Series TLC is hard - the weight of the vehicle, and lack of aerodynamics of the body and chassis fights against it.

Small displacement diesel engines and smaller tires can help. Over drive transmissions can help. But, the rig will never get mileage like a Geo Metro!
:D

Instead of dropping major coin for the fuel injection system, spend $300 on a Aisen carb rebuild from Jim C. He will tailor the carb to the engine and emissions system in your rig.

for better mileage, make sure the tires are at proper street pressure, make sure the engine is tuned-up, and remove roof racks/tents (reduced drag.)

Good luck!

Alan

You are on the wrong side of the threshold for sure. I don't know how anyone can think it's unclear. '75 and earlier is exempt, '76 and later is not. It is no longer rolling and likely will never be.

My CA-smog-passing stock '78 with 32" (measured) tires gets about 11 or 12 on the freeway at 70, so I rarely do that. We've been flat-towing it to the trailhead lately.

At 75mph thru the rockies to moab I get 10mpg. Almost ran out of Gas so I went 65 mph on th way home and got 12mph. Diff 4:11 and 33"x 12.5 wheel/tire.

I had a Holley carb, best I ever did with it was 18 one time, normal mileage was 10-12.

Put on a 77 2F high altitude carb, everything improved, except for raw power on the highway, now get a good solid 15MPG no matter what, usually figure on 8-10 MPG on the trail for fuel capacity and ability to get home. Hubs in for my work commute in the winter which is kind of highway usually 13-14MPG.

Running Mallory single point distributor, converted to electronic module, it is far more reliable that way. Stock spark plugs, timing advanced to 11degrees BTDC. I live at 6200 feet, higher elevation is not a problem, but it gets picky if and when I ever travel to elevations below 4500 feet, which is rare. Would probably have to retune it for lower elevation.

It was a factory hardtop, but I rolled and screwed up the top. Now thinking of going with Ehsans soft top, thinking it may get me another MPG or two, maybe. Haven't done it yet.

Also thinking of a B swap, could be nice to have that kind of mileage.

My 1984 60 series only gets 14-17 on really good days, fully stock. Different beast, I know, but it seems the 1F does better on gas.

What's your motor? SB 350 w/HEI and Q-Jet

What's your MPG? 10-11 consistantly combined city/hiway, I was getting 8-10 consistantly until I balanced the mixture on the carb.

It is balanced now with perfect vacuum, I have been thinking about leaning it out a little to see if I can squeeze another couple MPG's out of it.
