What’s your favorite spray paint for the drivetrain and chassis? I am not looking for showroom pretty, just a solid color and a rust barrier.

I used Rustoleum self etching primer and enamel on my rear hubs. I am hoping it will hold up.

What have worked long term for you?

I saw this in the hardware store and thought I would try it on the front axle. It’s expensive at $14 per can, but it claims is direct to metal and salt spray tested. I thought it was worth a try if I can prime and topcoat in same operation instead of two separate ones. The Rustolem above is $4-7 per can.

We’ll see how it holds up on the front hubs compared to the Rustoleum duo on the rear hubs.

Has anyone already used this? What did you think?

I have good luck with Rustoleum. As always, prep is the key. I did buy a can of Krylon for a home project and it was terrible. Super runny and didn't dry well. I actually returned it for a different can and it was the same.

Rustoleum can in pic - you can scrape it with your finger nail once cured. Duplicolor enamel is a bit better. Chassis Saver is a good compromise, but not rattle can. I've had a lot better results with Chassis Saver than POR Chassis coat and it's cheaper.

My go to was Krylon, it had re-coat anytime tech, EPA screwed that up. Now all of them have re-coat windows, or it will wrinkle, so all of it sucks.:poop:

I recently switched up to a self etch primer, instead of rustoleum clean metal primer or rustoleum rusty metal primer. The upgraded primer is much better, really sticks to the bare metal, and dries quick. Only bought it because it's what was at the store some other stuff was coming from, was pleasantly surprised at the improved bond and better topcoat appearance.

John Deere Blitz Black looks fantastic and people say it holds up great.

Here is something I found interesting:

Zero Rust is nothing more than a Rustoleum-type paint

Wow, thanks!

Guess I’ll be returning it!

Lots of good (and bad) info out there. Don’t have time to research everything and sort it out. I am at the point of just needing to get stuff done in the garage and get the 80 back together.

I have only been using self etch primer, Rustoleum’s, just because it’s what I can find easiest. Just like the comment on Zero Rust post above, wonder if there is really any different between brands.

Your local farm supply store, I.e. Tractor Supply and Cal-Ranch in my area. But I am going to farm stores all the time ;-)

If I was to use grey, then I would use Toyota Grey on my rims.

I used John Deere Blitz Black on my BIOR rear bumper. It was my first experience with it and it's only been a couple months or so but it's looking good so far. No rock chips or anything like that. I got my JD Blitz Black at my local John Deere dealer...pretty common in Nebraska, but maybe not in Charleston. :hillbilly: It is available online for the same price as in stores.

As others have said prep is the key with any paint. For bare metal I always clean like crazy with a good professional grease/wax/oil remover and then use a self etching primer. For rusty crap I scrape, wire brush, etc. until it's as bare as possible. Then a good cleaning with the grease/wax/oil remover, then Rustoleum rust converter, then a top coat.

How does the Blitz Black finish look? I saw a couple youtube vids that make it seem like nice stuff, but I am a big fan of the way the Rustoleum Satin or Semi-Gloss finishes look for things like my front and rear bumpers, etc. John Deere says it's suede/flat, but the way it looked in the vids I saw it was almost more of a satin finish. I would rather not have those types of applications look flat. Any thoughts?

Where do you find that? How much per can?

We get our cans from Toyota Lift of South Texas. I have no idea what the price is though since our maintenance guys buy it but it is a nice quality paint that I would use on my wheels if I need to paint them.
