you know how on orbital/dual action air sander the spindle that the disk attaches to is off-center? Well, on the one I'm dissecting for fun now there is this knob/large nut affair next to the free-spinning spindle. A big metal affair, knurled with flats that can be rotated.

Obviously, this can be used to lock the free-spinning spindle (also with flats) so you can remove and tighten the sanding disk. And probably balances the weight of the disk to decrease vibrations. Fair enough.

But I'm wondering if this thing also has some other function maybe. As in changing the orbital pattern based on balance or friction of something like that? Any subtlety there that you tool whizzes would know all about?

Nope, other than to allow non-orbital action.
