What's the best B Engine?

My opinion is either a 13B-T or a 5 bearing cam 3B

My vote is for the 15B-F. Its 4.1l, direct injection, reinforced block and slips in where a 3B goes quite easily. They can be found in abundance in Dyna 200 and Dyna 300 Light trucks.

I've got a 15B-F, can't fault it. Direct injection, 4.1l, and the last of the B series.

The head is similar to that of the 1hd-fte. Well the injectors and return fuel rail at least..

I daily mine in my BJ42 for work and it gets along a lot better than my 3B-T. The 15B-F in N/A spec is similar output figures compared to the 13BT.

To me this means theres still opportunity for more performance if you want to add a turbo later.

I got my 15B-F from Qld Motor refurbishing @ Yatala for $3600 inc gst and freight to Tas. So compared to 13B-T's which command around $5500 they are more affordable too..

I've just checked and noticed a place at Gracemere has Dyna trucks its wrecking that have the 15B.

You Ausies are lucky :) Not sure if such a engine exist here in BC or in Canada. BTW I have toyed with the idea of working in Austrlia. Have Americans that work in the country ?

The 13bt is a better engine than the 3b, but I don't think it is as tough.
I ripped apart my 3b with 400km on it and the 3 cam bearings were toast and the precups had the typical hairline cracks.
I plastigauged the cam shaft and took an inside bore of the cylinders, it was all still in spec.
The problem with the 3b is its lack of power, but engines don't get much tougher

Edit: I just wanted to add that at 400 k my engine was all original except for a few glow plugs. But the starter, alternator, injectors and oil pump were all still original.

They will all do 4-500000klms with just simple maintenance. Its more a case of buying the most powerful version you can afford. Top of the heap is the 15B FTE or its Hino equivalent. Hino seems to have taken the 15B block as its own although Toyota are still using it in their buses.

The 13BT rods are much bigger than a 3B

I like the fact that the 13B-T is indirect injection (no pre-cups to crack and possibly fall into cylinder) and I believe that any B series built after 85 had a 5 bearing cam.....? Both of which should improve both reliability and longevity I suppose.

I know you meant direct injection, and I agree that it would be nice to not have to worry about those little guys.13bt's are just too darn expensive to justify.
But if money were no issue I would be running a 13bt.

Yeah, direct. I was tired when I posted that. Yeah they aren't cheap are they.
