So I'm visiting the inlaws for the holidays. And my father in laws 1988 FJ62 has this ticking/ racheting sound which increases in frequency as you accelerate. It doesn't tick at idle. If you let off the throttle it goes away. This only happens in drive. And doesn't go away as engine warms up. What do you fine folks think is the cause?

Edit: sound seems to be coming from the engine bay

Loose torque converter bolt? U joint going bad....makes noise under load goes quiet off load? Some other component load dependent. My quick guesses without better location info

Sound is coming from the engine bay or at least the front of the cruiser. And it looks like there is some exhaust soot on the alternator. So maybe a possible leak at the manifold.

Seems like a lot of things tick on cruisers when they're wearing out.. I recently had a tick and solved it by replacing the water pump.

I quit taxiing my mum.

I've got a tick, and it's definitely an exhaust leak at the manifold. Your description could be mine. You can blow a shop vac (in "blow" mode) up the tailpipe and feel around your muffler, cats, and manifolds for air flow. Obviously, do this with the engine off and cold.

That is definitely the brewery. I gotta keep my eye out for this sweet cruiser next time I'm in Chippewa. Which will be in 2 days lol
