Whats my window for adjusting the valves? (update: FJ62)

Just my luck. I thought I was going to get rid of the slight clicking but I found some tight valves and now it's clicking louder. Not too bad but at least I know that it's tuned. I'm assuming someone complained about some clicking and they found the valve then tightened it up.

Also, @Godwin @g-man ... here's me trying to start the 62 with the valve cover off. It's Willie's b-day so it's willie on the radio non-stop here in Austin. :)

I'm guessing you didn't have the motor TDC and thats why you found some valves "tight" and maybe some way too open. If you adjusted the valves with the motor not tdc you will have compression problems aka starting problems. What source said two bb's is the tdc line? Never seen that. How many of these double bb's did you find? Possibly rivets? there should only be ONE TDC mark on the flywheel.

here is another one showing both marks in relation to the window
Thanks guys. Seems I was looking for a definite line, however it seems that the FSM shows two dots.

So I went back and found the dots not the line.

The two dots you show are not the TDC line or the 7deg BTDC BB. those marks are on the ring gear for the starter. The timing marks will be in the space below the tip ofyour pointer in your picture above.

I haven't seen you post how you are turning the engine over. If you are using the starter to bump the engine there is a chance you are missing the timing marks because the engine will roll-off TDC due to the compression. Take the spark plugs out and put a wrench on the alternator pulley bolt and you can roll over the engine very easily. Also, I will recommend again to remove the clutch inspection cover so you can see a larger view of the flywheel to find the marks and paint them.

Guys, although your explanation makes me think thrice. I see two dots right under the needle in the window in the FSM picture below as well as when I adjust the crankshaft to the right position. The FSM picture even shows the larger circular notch and on my fly wheel it is right there as well (just can't see it as it's not in the window anymore).

My way of moving the fly wheel was following the FSM. turning the crankshaft through the harmonic balancer bolt using my plumber wrench, as the socket no longer fit with the shroud in place. I monitored the flywheel window with my phone camera placed in the right spot. I'm able to see my phone's camera live through my apple watch.

also, this thread seems to also state the two dots are the TDC.

My apologies. Seems like you are right. My referece is the 2F not the 3FE. I didn't realize the 3FE might have different markings. Sounds like you are on the right track.

My little trick to find TDC with my iphone/watch.

Nice video @TexFJ .

I recently did my valve clearance. Don't have a nifty iphone/watch though.. :)

My trick was just use the PS pulley with flashlight pointed at the timing opening to look for the 2 BB dots ( I have an 89' 3FE).

The then would unscrew the three screws on the distributor to make sure the rotor was facing the #1 Spark Plug.

Similar to you, I also tried starting up the engine a few times with the valve cover off - but its a no go.

Have you done your galley plug fix? Now that you are a pro at taking off the valve cover you can get that annoying chore over with.

oil galley plug was fixed by PO but it made me nervous on how much it stuck out. so I JB Welded that sucker as it wasn't budging under my hex wrench.

Easy way to find TDC on any inline is to watch the valves on the OPPOSITE cyl. So when you see the exhaust closing, and the intake opening on #6, #1 is at (close enough) TDC, and you can adjust #1. Carry on in firing order, watch 2, adjust 5, watch 4, adjust 3, etc..etc.. 1 5 3 6 2 4
