I'm wanting to build up a LX470. With a SAS, supercharger, expedition style lift, etc....

Would like to start with a low mileage rig. Are there any years that stand out as better or more reliable or more options?

I saw that the rear locker wasn't offered after '00? It can still be installed though, right?

There are those who would argue that the LX's ability to control traction does 90% of what lockers do. Rear lockers can definitely be installed.

If you want low mileage, I'd generally start with '07's and work backward.

You can check model differences by year at sleeoffroad.com. Click on 100 series newbie guide on the home page.

'06 and '07's use variable valve timing for 40 or so more hp.

I personally would avoid any year with an air pump.

depends on who you ask 99 is the sweet spot for wheeling with locker.

98...not biased either!!

And I appreciate everyone's input.

This week, I bought three 80 series cruisers:

-'91 with a non functioning transmission and overall maybe a 3-4 cosmetically......$1300
-91 SBC V8 SM465 4spd with gear splitter box, 8" lift, hi-steer, front locker, 38's, beat up body $3k
-97 with an engine with hole in it 349k miles...$1200

I'm gonna make the crawler nicer with the '97 body and a new engine with GM TPI injection...maybe put the full floater and trans from the '97 on the other '91 for a ranch vehicle...

But, I'd still like to build up a 100 series, cuz they're newer and cleaner and sweet in their own way......stock V8...low miles.....good looks....... :~)

Steve, No more air pump worries anymore with a $180 fix from EBay

OP - Seeing how you plan on totally modding the vehicle throw in a Chevy LSA. That way you just need to find a clean body.

That's a fine idea, actually! But how common is a failed engine? Let me know if you see any please.

Stock super reliable but when you start SC'n you get a lot more components to fail and reliability drops. What are you planes for controlling Heat and EGT's with the SC?
You can find a super clean 99 with factory rear locker for <$10K. A strong V8 and the stock 4.30 gears will be ideal mated to a 6sp auto.
