I'm going to look at a 8274 tomorrow. I know nothing about these winches other than they are a good fit for the 40. I've been reading up on rebuild threads but would like to know what to look for when I look at this winch. The owner says it is works but it is not mounted on anything. He is asking $450 for it but said he would take $400. It looks kinda rough the cable looks pretty rusted and there is no hook on the end. What do I need to look / listen for when I operate this winch. Anything I should check? I'd really like to get it for $300 but I don't know if he'll go that low.

Thanks,
Nick

Very late answer...

I'd look for the following:

Broken mounting points (4) or other cracks in the cast aluminum housing
Missing parts like Brake, Brake Pawl, Free Spool Knob, Cable with Hook, Fairlead, REMOTE!, etc
Hook it up and make sure it powers in and out (click with no movement = bad solenoid)
If no movement on above test, run power directly to the motor to verify it is good
Pull the free spool knob and verify the drum turns by hand

Definitely read some of the rebuild threads to get familiar with all the parts and how they work.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I ended up buying it and have been reading up on the multiple rebuild threads here. I ordered a brake rebuild kit and lower end rebuild kit from Dealers Truck Equipment out of Arkansas. I shopped around and they have THE best prices than any other dealers I called in the south (their prices are about 25-50% cheaper than the other warn dealers listed on warns website). It ran fine, but when I started taking the solenoid pack apart, they were so corroded that all the bolts broke off. I found a local golf cart supply company that sells continous duty solenoids so I am going to try them. I also found that the needle bearing (part #8356) that goes in the lower end was completely missing, so I need to place another order for that, a new plastic end cap (7582), and 3 new electrical boots (2090). I also ordered a new motor because mine was completely corroded.
