actually, it has TONS of power (enough to spin 36" tractor tires if the need arises), still puts out 14 psi of boost but SMOKES like a old man telling stories around the camp fire...
i have not had it back to town to check it out, i just keep wheeling it... mayb eafter this weekend's sept run i might bring it back home. it now needs a drivers window, an electric hub, turbo checked out and just a good all around tune up...

cheers

I'm going out on a limb here but....

Wayne, you admit you flip / flop. Maybe drive it for a bit - in fall time in some crisp air light 4-wheeling trips, then if you think you had enough:

Sell it to a genuine Cruiserhead for a fair buck, and make somebody *really*
happy.

Like Louis said, there will likely be another nice truck from Japan come along that you might sink your teeth into, or score a troopy somehow. I like versatility....and dont like sleeping in tents anymore. But that's me... its a very cool and mint rig. I'd keep it pretty stock myself if I was lucky enough to own it. MAybe some springs, some 32's. It's a truck for life for somebody...is it you?
Cheers man, just enjoy for now.

It's still fun to talk about it ;)

ditto .. ! :D

Ok .. my opinion ..

I have my HDJ-80 pretty clean second hand, is pretty close that I want, leather, sun roof, double air / tank, tubro diesel, tons of extras .. pretty clean.

I'm not plan to wheel she ( her aka Marilu ) soon .. nothing .! but yes I plan some OME heavy suspension, front and rear bull bar, snorkel MT tires, intercooler and winch.

Just for look .. that is me .. I'm not a usual driver for usual stock vehicle .. I Love cruiser, I love the off road mods .. and someday maybe when Tencha goes away Marilu take the frist place in trail ready rig !

i could do all the bolt on mods but then some would be offended that the truck was "molested" even if i did put it back to stock...
but then maybe this truck wasn't right for them in the first place...

hummm, what to do...

Since you already have a "bush" cruiser, I would say keep it stock, fix anything that needs fixing, if there are some non-factory parts, maybe replace these. Take it to shows since it is first rare and second probably pretty clean so it would not take much to make it show quality and win some awards:) You can skip the show curcuit if that's not your thing. Being as rare as it it, it would be nice to keep it original, maybe a little taller tires since that makes them look more proportional. Or sell it so someone that will want to keep it original and clean. Just my opinion, since it is twice as hard for U.S. guys to get what you guys can get:)

Wayne,

What you have there is a future collector vehicle that if you keep it stock, cherry and low KM's, it might be worth a big buck some day. There are plenty of 70's out there you can build and wheel....but this aint one of them. Remember what you told me to do with mine back in 98??? For the sake of the reading audience you told me to leave it stock and buy a bush truck. I wished I would have taken your advice cause now I have a rig that's too clean & too expensive to think about beating up on the rocks and a cheap minitruck that does that duty just perfectly.

Since it's nice and dry down here, I will be nice and let you leave it with me so it won't rust:)

Seriously Wayne, if you modify or beat this truck, I will have to come back up there and kick your ass...KEEP IT STOCK!:flipoff2:

LOL!!
sheesh, you would have to bring that back up, eh?
;^)

<scratching my head> maybe taking my own advice would be a good thing. <my my that would be a first!!>

Wayne,

I have met you once and have merely read a whole lot of your email so I am clearly not a good judge of your character, nevertheless, this is my read on your personality. I would like you to know that these comments are not intended to yank your chain they are just comments.

You're a big guy and have big presence when you enter a room. You also seem to get bored fast (no insult intended as I too have the attention span of a bumble bee). So lets put these two observations together: a plain old stock 70 wont get the attention you like and it is boring and useless.

This near new 70 will only impress a few folks, and of those they will only be those types that know what it is. A dressed up 70 has more appeal and will draw more attention universally cause all that bling just does. Also, a dressed up 70 has greater utility than a stock 70. Once again no insult intended as I too want to dress up my 70 for the same reasons. And lets face it a stock 70 is kinda boring, particularly one that you would not abuse because you want to preserve it.

Why keep it around if you cant use it in the fashion you would like? Yeah sure it is something rare and should be charished as such. On the other hand, a stock cruiser is boring (yeah I know I said that already) and is not really an extension of your personality. After all, a stock cruiser is what you look for when you buy to import and resell. Yup, nice stock cruisers, or at least that is what I have ascertained from the stock you have sold. There will alwways be another nice cruiser around the corner. So here is my vote. No matter what you do, dress it up, store it as stock, drive it as stock, or whatever, you are going to get bored with it. So while you have it you might as well have fun with it. Dress it up and beat the hell out of it. If you have doubts ask yourself this: is there any such thing as a collectable cruiser? If there is, is it accessable and marketable? Sure we all love our cruisers, but you really got to ask yourself, who beyond us freakjobs, would buy a cruiser like that and consder it a real treasure or a real collectable? Is there really a market for it? If it really was a collectable do you think it would have sold for the price you paid? Is it going to appreciate enough to pay for itself, your boredom and storage? If you want to collect a vehicle that will appreciate and be considered collectable sell this thing and buy some other neat vehicle on auction like an old mopar or mercedes or something. Even then, do you have it in the fabric of your personality to let it sit there? I tried it once with that damn Jeep I had. It drove me nuts. It just sat there in the garage because I did not want to dent it or get it dirty. In the end I sold it and used the cash to buy cruiser stuff that i could use and abuse. I did not gain or lose any money. I felt better when I sold it because i did not realize how much it pissed me off that I could not use it. I am sure that once you get bored with it you are going to either sell it or dress it up, either way you are going to feel bad because of what it once was. So why worry about it? Dress it up and drive the snot out of it, sell it then go hunting again. After all thats the fun part, the hunting that is.

Forgive me for permitting myself the latitude to assess you,

Karl

I wonder if you would see through a blatant shopping list that I could put together in hopes that you'd build my dream truck, tire of it and sell it to me next summer in time to take to all the TLCA events? Probably not.

I think you should basically build another one like you did with Micheal's. Add some rocker protection this time and some cool custom bumpers. A set of jump seats like you had in Smokey, a 24V 8274, A set of lockers and a toybox... wait that is pretty much my dream truck list. Never mind, you're on your own. :)

---granted

You're a big guy and have big presence when you enter a room.

---LOL!! so i am told...

You also seem to get bored fast (no insult intended as I too have the attention span of a bumble bee). So lets put these two observations together: a plain old stock 70 wont get the attention you like and it is boring and useless.

---hummm, bingo. that sounds about right...

---yep, one of the main reasons i have sold many of the cruisers i have bought. i can't stand having to worry about "parking lot dings" or other "ooops" that happen in everyday life...

Why keep it around if you cant use it in the fashion you would like? Yeah sure it is something rare and should be charished as such.

--- the main reason of my problem and this thread...

On the other hand, a stock cruiser is boring (yeah I know I said that already) and is not really an extension of your personality.

---agree completely

After all, a stock cruiser is what you look for when you buy to import and resell. Yup, nice stock cruisers, or at least that is what I have ascertained from the stock you have sold. There will alwways be another nice cruiser around the corner.

---but not one like this, these are rare and this one especially...

Dress it up and beat the hell out of it. If you have doubts ask yourself this: is there any such thing as a collectable cruiser?

---definately

If there is, is it accessable and marketable? Sure we all love our cruisers, but you really got to ask yourself, who beyond us freakjobs, would buy a cruiser like that and consder it a real treasure or a real collectable?

---to the right person, yes. but how long before the right person comes along?

Is there really a market for it? If it really was a collectable do you think it would have sold for the price you paid? Is it going to appreciate enough to pay for itself, your boredom and storage?

---yes, it already has BUT not enough to pay for boredom i guess...

If you want to collect a vehicle that will appreciate and be considered collectable sell this thing and buy some other neat vehicle on auction like an old mopar or mercedes or something. Even then, do you have it in the fabric of your personality to let it sit there?

---i highly doubt it... maybe if i never see it as in stored in a quonset under cover sheet

---when i bought the 89 BJ74 with 27,000 km on it i felt i would keep that one for life or till the first time i took it out when i went for lunch. i watched as people parked next to it and worried about the darn thing so much i had a rotten meal. i ended up selling it to the right owner and he loves it and babies it (he has a whole 2000km racked up on it in 2 years). i was happy to see it go to a good home.

I am sure that once you get bored with it you are going to either sell it or dress it up, either way you are going to feel bad because of what it once was. So why worry about it? Dress it up and drive the snot out of it, sell it then go hunting again. After all thats the fun part, the hunting that is.

---that is so true, it is not the aquiring of material goods, it is the locating of them...at least for guys like us...

Forgive me for permitting myself the latitude to assess you,

---not a problem, you seem to hit the nail on the head...

LOL!!
Bruce, IF i build it up and go to sell it i will give you first dibs... (it won't have a toybox)... but i won't hold on to it in the back yard for 3 years this time though...LOL!!

so it is sitting in Vancouver and should be here pretty quick...
am i excited? yes. i am getting the same tinglies that i did when i started on the HZJ75 and then the PZJ75 so this is good...
the decision has been made to "upgrade" the unit with a lift, front bumper, factory snorkel and modified aluminium door and side panels (with side facing seats covered to match the fronts), brand new top and other bits as well as a set of skinny agressive tires (or maybe even a custom grooved set, i love the look of the last set we groved).

for now it is all bolt on (reversable) mods i am doing, then once i am done i can either take it to the next level or drive it for a while and then turn it back to stock in a weekend...

(other mods that are crossing my mind are turbo, intercooler, propane injection (for an estimated 170+ hp) and a PS install but this is after i have decided to keep the truck for a long duration...

just thought some of you might want to know the choice i made.

once the truck arrives i will start a new thread with the mods taking place...

cheers

How do you reverse a snorkel install?
