I had my stock 67 40 motor yanked today to do some ahem... work on the bottom end (dont even ask ) and I about coughed up a hairball when I saw the mechanic just yank off the pulley and dampner assembly. There was no customary (to me anyway) bolt and washer like every other internal combustion engine I have ever seen in my not so short life. Um...:confused::confused: Anyone have ANY idea what gives on this? Is this normal? I was watching and he just said... oh it´s loose and pulled it off. On the front of the pulley it has a very funky looking spirally cut into the front end of the pulley where a bolt should go, but there are no threads in the crank. BTW it was not leaking any oil from the seal so it was relatively stable. So... what, should I just locktite it ???? I´m pretty befuddled on this, please advise!

Thanks
Mark Sheldon

Press on pulley with no nut was stock until late 1969.

Wow, thanks... are they meant to come off so easily? By hand? should I locktite the crap out of it? I was sure that when I went back down in the morning I would find a broken off bolt in the crank.... YAY!!! a disaster that didn´t happen.

thanks again

It is an interference/press fit. If the pulley was removed by hand with little to no effort, you will want to use some kind of a retaining compound (green locktite), or, even better, upgrade to a newer style crank with a press on pulley and large retaining nut/mechanical locking plate.

this thread concern plus the other thread on the 30+ over question = a upgrade( better) crank with later features.......;)

Oh yeah, you're right.

Already cut .030, and the balancer is falling off the front... :hhmm:
Now I'm concerned, and it's not even my junk.

Yes, yooryte of course. But for now thanks for the green locktite recomendation.
