I am looking at a 87 fj 60 to buy for 3000 dollars. It has thirty threes and a four inch lift and looks really good except for some minor body damage. Any typical rust spots i should be sure to look at? Anything else at all would help too, especially electrical problems.

Check for rust over the wheel wells and rear frame rails. If it runs rough it can be several things, vacuum leak, manifold leak, carb problems, fuel filter, fuel pump, so if it runs rough, see if you can diagnos before you buy. Electrical problems don't seem to be a huge issue with these trucks (other than fusible links and some wire that runs to the back of the truck through the rear quarter, but I can't remember what that is about right now). Vacuum leaks are the big issue, if the vac hoses haven't been replaced, plan on placing an order with McMaster Carr eventually to replace all the vacuum hoses, unless it's desmogged, then much less of an issue.

Another place to look for rust (on mine anyway) along the bottom of the body by the doors, also the tailgate is a bad spot for mine. :bang:
Good Luck

Compression or leak-down; park brake; steering knuckle grease leaks; electrical gremlins; hacked wiring; dry driveline zerks; flat springs; loose tie rod ends.

Couple rules I try to follow when buying used (all I ever do): get a vehicle with complete maintenance & repair records; never buy one with electrical problems; drive as many as you can before you make an offer on one; don't buy the 1st one you look at.

And, check you checking account balance for money to spend on it after you buy it! Allow at least $1000

Thanks everyone. I checked everything that you said and it looks great. I will post pics soon. And i'm hoping I will be owning it very soon.
Thanks again everyone

I would do the compression check if you haven't done it. It is easy and can tell you a lot. Looks for leaks and drive it as much as you can before buying it.

Hope it works out for you.

Are there service records? Oil leaks from front and rear seals on engine and drive shafts? HAPPY NEW YEAR! MIKE

These are all good points, but remember it IS a 20+ year old vehicle. It will have some problems. You just have to find one with fewer problems than the rest.

That said, rust over the wheel wells is easy to fix. I would be wary of rust at the bottom of doors, tailgate, and certain areas on the frame. Do a compression test on the motor and call it good. Everything else can be fairly easily fixed (eg; vaccuum lines, carb, etc).

A low interest loan to keep the thing going  One good note is gas has gone down so that will make the driving experience a little more enjoyable ;)
