What purpose does this hose serve?

I'm asking because I broke the plastic barb on the radiator and debating whether I need a new radiator or not.

Yes, you need a new radiator. That's a bypass hose. Unfortunately many of us have broken the same barb off, a bad excuse for a new rad.

Thanks for the heads up. Will be ordering a new radiator soon.
 
I have repaired those in the past(not on a Land Criuser) with a tight fitting piece of brass tube inserted inside the plastic barb and some epoxy. Not the best fix but something to ponder at the least.
 
Yes bypass hose, new rad for you mate :(

On a positive note, that is a seriously clean engine bay haha
 
Yeah, too clean. You need to 'wheel' that thing !!!
 
Hey since you are going to toss it, I cut that thing off when I do a swap, I would like that radiator
 
I broke mine a year ago as well. It's not uncommon. Now you have a good reason to buy an all metal radiator.

Guilty as well. Frustrating but at least you know your cooling system will be good. Look at replacing the water pump and t stat while you're in there.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. That's not my engine BTW, just a pic off google.

I was thinking a good all metal radiator too, however everything I'm reading leads me back to an OEM radiator. I'm tempted to do the water pump and thermostat too but funds are seriously low and I need my LC ready for a trip in June so those will have to wait.

Found a NIB Koyo radiator on CL .... waiting to hear back from the seller currently.
 
I'm not ready to quit yet. Lol. This barb fitting is in there rock solid. I hope it works.

the JB Weld will still be solid long after the brass has corroded away. Nice fix

I've saved many parts over the years with JB Weld - most recently a hose fitting on the radiator of the F350 - holding strong after 10k miles.

Just a word of experience in more severe service when we broke out the JB to get us through a weekend emergency callout (sulfuric acid refinery) - I hope you got some JB behind the brass barb threads.

I'm a 'near expert level' JB user at work, and I'm even being beat on my home hot tub with a crack in the pump side of a motor - the fatal factor is the material patching.

I can & will be coming into the pump case this next time from the inside the housing - I had JB'ed the crack & hose clamped x3, a rubber-backed, piece of aluminum sheet & it failed here about 3 months after being watertight (granted ~150 psi but only 108*).

Anyhow, hope it works for you, but like the cases I am paid overtime $$$ to open up & repair from inside, I gotta own a failure when I 'cheated it' on my own hot tub.

Best to you & the repair, esp since we run ~25% the PSI in our cooling system!
 
Thanks for the advice John. I did put JB on the threads before screwing it in. I read that the cooling system runs up to 13psi. But up to 200+ degrees. Hopefully it works. Do you foresee an issue?
 
You can buy an aisin water pump on amazon for just over $60 and the oem thermostat was under $25 from my local dealership.

The original pumps last a very long time though.
