What other Rear Bumpers are out there

Metaltech will be introducing a full 80-series line in the future (near or far-distant, unknown). I'll stay tuned...

here are a couple of pics of my 4x4 labs bumper, made by Luke Porter, yes you do have to chop the rear cross member but if your keeping the truck for ever its not an issue :) Mudrack is a very talented mechanic who runs a great shop in sonoma but does not make any bumpers I just have his sticker on the bumper :flipoff2:

Kinda generic but no one has mentioned TJM. Its not a bad product and a lot lighter than the others mentioned.

I have a TJM on my 80. I went with it only because I had a 40% discount coupon which obviously made it much cheaper than anything else.

Pros: blends well with the 80s lines. Looks much like a factory bumper. Weighs less than a Kaymar. The additional tail and turn signals are nice (but somewhat vulnerable to rocks). Good tire carrier (for up to a 285/75 tire). Comes setup with mounting for dual carriers.

Cons: Poor powdercoating. Mine was chipping off on one of the corners within a year. Tire carrier is made for a max 285/75 tire. While it will hold a 315 ok, the tire doesn't set vertical and is too low (departure angle limited by the tire rather than the bumper). Latch is vulnerable as well. Tow hooks mounted on the bottom of the bumper are subject to rock damage as well.

Bottom line other than the crappy powdercoating, its a nice looking and very functional bumper for expedition type wheeling (what it was designed for), but isn't the best choice for harder core rockcrawling.

How/where were you able to get a 40% off coupon? Thats a sweet deal for sure!

I'd echo the same things about the TJM. Nice bumper. I got my truck from the east coast and the TJM is starting to rust around the corners and the spindles. I've got it off the truck and apart now refinishing it. It attaches the sides to the frame, which is nice. It wouldn't support the weight of the truck, but could be beefed up so that it could fairly easily.

Had to get a couple parts from TJM. They've been good to work with, but man the stuff is pricey. Bob, are you using the second spindle? I thought about adding a cooler rack or jerry can carrier, but TJM only offers tire carriers.

.

Are you having re-powdercoated or repainted? What is the cost?

I got a 2nd spindle from 4x4 Connection. I used it to modify an existing tire carrier that Christo made (for a factory bumper) to work on the TJM. My plan is to mod the TJM carrier to use to carry a jerry can and/or C02 tank.

For now just repainting, the rust isn't anywhere that might get a rock hit, and my powdercoat has been pretty good. 4-5 coats of Rusto Hardhat should be fine. With the refinish I've thought about lopping off the tow loops. Like you said, they drag around on everything, but I guess better those than the whole bumper?

I've dug around to find a spindle that uses the 1.25" and .75" bearings on the TJM and can't find anything. I'll give 4x4connection a try.

Strength?

Are most of these after-market REAR bumpers as strong as if not stronger than the factory installed OEM REAR bumpers? I'm not a hard core wheeler but when I get hit, it seems to always be from behind (not that there's anything wrong with that :D ). Also with ARB/winch bar up front, some extra weight in da back might balance things out. If I go custom, are most weld shops up to the task? Thoughts?

Well the aftermarket bumpers that iron pig, slee, hanna, 4x4 labs, etc are very heavy duty and will balance out the weight as well as give you more protection. As far as weld shops being up to the task well I don't know. Probably if you shell out a few grand. :D

That ARB'd 100 Series is seriously sexy.

I e-mailed ARB about the 80 series Rear Bumper. They said it would be out early this summer and they put me on a notify list. I'll post if I hear from you.

Finally. I have been putting off buying a rear bumper for the past 6 months. Now the ARB rear is almost here....

Yeah, please let us know...

I talked to ARB a couple of weeks ago and they said some thing like,"Probably in the summer."

If I could, I'll put a deposit down now.

4x4 Connection??? Isn't that Junk's favorite shop? :D

The spindles are available from Slee or 4x4 LABS. I bought the 4x4 LABS spindles for my build on the 80 and for the build I'm going to do on CookieMonster's 60.

Stay away from the Rockstomper spindles. They are pretty light duty. I've seen a couple of them die on the trail.
