What oil do you use?

I certainly realize I am in the minority but I have always used Amsoil for everything. My father used it in his P-51 when I was a kid (think the product was called AVOIL). That engine was a beast so I am a bit biased. Obviously, Rotella is highly recommended. Know many guys who use it with great success, so you can't go wrong with that. I just have always used Amsoil and never had a problem, so IMO why switch? Guess I like being a little different too. That's my .02

I would love to see pictures of said Mustang :)

I am sure I have an actual physical photo of it in a shoebox somewhere. Unfortunately, I have my fathers stubbornness and have not talked to him since I told him to F off and stay out of my life. That was in 97 my sophomore year in college. Unfortunately, you can't pick your parents.

James I do not know you or your father, but I am far too familiar with the situation. I tried countless times to make it work only to wind up where I began. My father died over a decade ago and all I have had since is regret. I talk to my father more now than I ever did in the last 20 years of his life.

Do what you can James, regret sucks when you are the only one carrying it

First off, forgive me everyone I certainly didn't not mean to hijack this thread, so after this I will shut up because this thread is not about me, it about oil. Second, I appreciate your perspective and I certainly respect your opinion. To be honest, I don't give it any thought at all and I have zero regrets. I know it sounds cold, but he is dead to me and has been for years. I already have closure and at this point any reconnection would give him closure and frankly I don't want to give him that because he does not deserve that.

Truthfully, I am thankful for having him in my life because it showed me what not to be and in a messed up way it made me be the father I am today. I am everything to my boys that he wasn't. He literally drove me to be the very best father I can be. My little guys are my entire world and I will never leave their side, ever. So in a sick way I am very THANKFUL for the way things unfolded because if it didn't, I know I wouldn't be the father I am. No worries, it's all about turning a negative into a positive. So sorry everyone I will shut up now.

Now back to oil.......

Amsoil is great oil. I used to run it exclusively in my supercharged SVT Cobra. It's a shame you can't just buy it off the shelf. It's just too much of a pain to get the stuff. I almost became a dealer a few years back just to make things easier. I sold my fast cars. I don't own a vehicle anymore that I feel is worthy of, or can truly benefit from Amsoil.

I agree, I used to be a dealer. Thankfully in raleigh we have an actual Amsoil store so I don't have to do that anymore. Plus, the store is about a half mile from my house so it's really easy for me to pick up whatever I need at a moments notice. Wish there were more stores like this everywhere.

How are the store prices vs. dealer ship to home? I used to use it in my Duramax, and really just quit due to expense and it being a bit of a PITA. I also quit doing my own oil changes in the Dmax b/c it gets messy, but after the last couple of trips to a lube place, I'm going to be taking that responsibility back.

His prices are pretty much retail to begin with. Initially, he gave me a discount when I had my dealers license, but that has since expired. It all depends upon how much you buy and how frequent you buy. He has given me price breaks in the past, however usually that is when I am buying multiple products. I am a huge fan of there diff and gear lube and usually I buy everything at once. I don't think there will be any discount if you go in and buy a few quarts of oil. If you do stop by I highly suggest calling beforehand. He make most of his money going out and servicing the various car and motorcycle dealerships. Motomax put me on to this guy a couple of years ago and have been going back ever since.

I don't think the gets much walk in traffic, so he is easy to talk up and get a price break. I feel like I am the only customer he has seen each time I go in. He does carry every single product in stock which is good. Hope this helps.

Hmmm. Here is something that could get me off my Mobil1 kick. Group buy?

I know I was getting 1MPG better on Amsoil than any other oil in my DMax. I used to call BS on any MPG claims and fluids, but I saw it for myself. Unfortunately, it's basically a wash b/c the oil is expensive.... however, if you know there is reduced friction in a motor you know your benefiting in more ways than economy.

If you want man I can stop by there later this week to see what he can do on a group by. Naturally, it depends on what everyone wants and how much, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Like I said its right down the street from me, so it's not a big deal to do so.

I run Amsoil in everything. Ive been a dealer for years and will be for another 10. I think I made a post a few years back when i lived in fayettenam that I would give discounts on it to ONSC. I can have the stuff delivered to your house in one business day since the East coast warehouse is in richmond va.

I'm a huge fan of Amsoil and Mobil 1 but in an old motor, I'd run just Rotella and change it often. Even Synthetic I change it often.

I think there are some reasons not to switch to synthetic at high mileage - is that a fact - no - I have no proof of that. Could just be an old wives tale not to. Who knows.

Ramon, why no detergent? I was always told to use non detergent for initial start up, change the oil after 20 min, change again at 2 hours or 150 miles and then 500 and 1500. Then switch to regular oil after 3000 miles and then can go synthetic after that.

I have heard that running non detergent oil will sludge up a motor, build up deposits on the valves and pistons?

Not sayin, I'm right. Just curious and always looking to learn more.

You are exactly right. Simple brain fart on my part. I did a good bit of research for startup and jotted down some notes. That was ONLY for break-in (non-detergent), but the higher ZDDP was for the full lifespan. Thanks for correcting my mistake!
