Ummm, interesting. So you have a 12R in an FJ40? Well, your options will depend on your budget, your fabrication skills, and how much of the drive train you want to replace (axles, TC, tranny, etc). What is behind the 12R as far as tranny and tc?

I doubt you will find many folks on this list familiar with the 12R. Is it dimensionally similar to a 22R/RE? You could make a 22RE fit, but I don't think you would be happy. Yes, more power than the 12R, but probably not enough to push an FJ40 out of the way.

V8s are common swaps into FJ40s and the adapters to make it work are available.
I've seen a modern Chevy V6 in an FJ40 and it seemed to work well.
You could install a 2F or 3FE, or 2FE.

I think we need to know how you plan on using this truck. Also, another thought. If this was a factory truck, it would appear it might have some historical value. Are you sure you want to butcher it up?

Google "toyota delta mini cruiser" without the quotes.
They were made in the late '70s and early '80s in the Philippines. 90% the size of a BJ40, hence the Mini Cruiser nickname. So the engine compartment is likely smaller than a 40 series. Actually looks much smaller.

From a translated page:
The Delta Mini Cruiser 4x4 is a vehicle built in the late 70s and early 80s in the Philippines in the establishment of Manila, Delta Motors Corporation under license from the Japanese Toyota, to equip the 'national army.

The Mini Cruiser fact it can be said to be the copy-scale 90/100 of Toyota BJ40.

The original name was M-1777 but was soon identified as "Mini Cruiser".

There were three engines available for the Italian market, one gasoline (the original engine) and two diesel.
The engines were the 2.0 Isuzu diesel and a 2.4 TD 1982 (HR 492) 100-hp from the proposed VM 'Gandin importer of San Vendemiano (TV).

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the Mini Cruiser is approved for 6 persons.
The engine sizes in the quote is incomplete.

it is not a land cruiser, and is about 70 percent the size of an fj40....the 12r gets it around ok but im at 6000ft elevation which kills hp and tq, there are zero hi po goodys for the mini cruiser's 12r. it is not a good engine design as it only has three crank main bearings instead of 5 and i want to put 35's under it, and lockers in both ends. i have mad fabrication skills.... the issue is the back of the 12r engine has a large circle that the flywheel sits in that mates to the transmission... so i need to find another toyota engine that has this large round bell housing cast into the back of block. it uses a gm mc6 transmission here is a much better write up on the nistory of the mini cruiser...it starts detailing the mini cruiser halfway down the page...

The Delta Mini Cruiser

you will see in the article it was a joint venture with toyato that made the body, frame, and chassis, and dana spicer corp that supplied the drive line...nothing will interchange with any of the true fj's. 12r engine, mc6 4 spd, dana 20 transfer case, dana 30 frt, and dana 44 rear...

Is your rear axle centered or offset?

Is your rear axle centered or offset?

the rear end is centered but the transfer case is offset to the left a little. my driveshaft goes from slightly offset left to the pumpkin which if centered. the offset is about 4 inches but i have no drive line vibration. i had a suzuki smaria with sbc np 205 t case to a dana 60 front end and the front shaft was offset almost a foot and had no issue with vibration,.

Where are you? Can you get an entire mini-truck drive line and swap that in? 22RE+W56+TC, or maybe 3RZ+W59+TC?

im in medellin colombia and there are no huge salvage yards like in the states, so that would be tuff, the 12 r is a pos of an engine in that it has a 3 bearing crank that flexes a lot and no one makes any hp stuff for it. i was hoping i could put a larger later model 1800 or 2L in it that i caould get cams, carbs, hi comp forged pistons for...the issiue is the back of the 12r block has a large circular bellhouse that is part of the cast iron block. i'm tying to figure out what other toyota engines have this large bellhouse on the back of the block...then it will be an easy drop in swap, i can fab my own headers and motor mounts and anything else i might need no problem, i have spent days trying to find a 65 year old mechanic that really knows the older toyota engines...with zero luck, thx again for any info, rm

You could make an adapter plate to hookup a newer engine to the transmission. Another harder option is a custom bell housing for the transmission.

On a side note, what are the engine compartment dimensions? I know I've seen dimensions for various engines on the web. Anybody know where ones for the 20R, 22R, and 22RE are?

i have plenty of room for a bigger four, hell i shoe horned a 388 small block chevy into a samarai. lol i just want a bigger toyota eninge with as few hassles as possible. i will be yanking the trans and transfer to go through them in a week or two when i have the trans out i will get a better look and measure everything and go from there, there are several older toy engines that make 140 hp stock, im sure a could bump them up a little bit from that and that is all im looking for...rm

is your "samurai" the same as our samurai (made by suzuki)? I know some of the Toyotas are called samurais in Venezuela.

im an american ive only been living here for a few years. yeah my suzuki was a rgular 1300 cc oem type. i just bought the body and frame from a salvage yard i delt with a lot for 400 bucks. i bridged the frame put in a ten point cage that went front to rear it was very rigid. i put in a 388 sbc roller motor that made 570hp and a lot of tq, turbo 400, np 205 transfer case, dana 60 and 70, with detriot lockers and 6.17 gears on 44 swampers. it had 12" inch coil overs on a 5 link set up. it was a monster, that would go through mud holes a full track or 66" tire buggy couldn't cross, i lived in hallandale fl 25 minutes from the everglades..it would float through gator hole on the 44'. i build my own headers and flowmaster style mufflers it sounded like an offshore power boat when the exhaust was under was 3.5 inches thruough the mufflers.lol i also have a suzuki lj50 4x4 right now its gat a 539 cc 3cyl 2stroke engine and is bad ass, i just finished restoring it before i realized it will barley mae it up the hills in medellin due to the 6000 ft altitude...really sucks it makes 33 hp at sea level so probably 26 up here, i just bought a 135hp rotax 951 seadoo motor for it lol i think that will wake that thing up. i couldn't resist buying the delta tho, its really a sweet lil truck and great wheels considering gs is over 5 bucks a gallon here...

i was thinking if i make 4 large round spacers or stands about 2 inches long and use them to set my clutch depth into the bellhousing. once i get that done i can take some 2' wide pieces of 3 8's steel plate and form the curve i need then weld that to the 4 stands creating a stout explosion proof belhouse extension like my 12r. any one know the height and with of the 22r ears on the back of the block that the trans bolts to are. thx, in advance. im really looking forward to this project...thx for an info
