What have you got? Where did you get it? Why is it good? Do you have pics? How much did it cost?

i have about 3 different ones. a canvas collapsable one that i got cheap from target. you can pay a lot for a nicer one though.

i have a wire one that is also collapsable. this is the one my dog sleeps in all the time. i think that one cost about $100. nice thing about this one is it has a plastic type tray that you can slide out easily if the dog has an accident.

when our dog was a puppy it slept in a plastic crate, which was good because you can easily hose it out. i think that one cost around $50.

the prices vary accross the board. as far as where to purchase. any pet store or feed store sells them. i suggest going to a feed store for a cheaper price though. the chain pet stores, such as petco, petsmart etc, are way overpriced on everything. we get food, bones, toys etc for a feed store for about 1/3 less than if we purchased from a pet store.

post up pics of the pup!

I bought him wednesday, he turned 6 weeks on saturday, and I am picking him up this friday. I'll post pics next week probably. He's a cute little Dobe.

I helped write, produce and/or organize most of this:

A lot of people freak out over the kennel/crate thing, but in reality dogs are denning animals. They feel safe in a comfy little hidey-hole. If you do it right, it will help your puppy feel more secure and when that's the case, he'll chew less, whine less, bark less, etc.

You don't have to buy a Doscocil crate, but go through their site and you'll learn how to kennel train, fit the right crate to the dog/breed, etc. (Although if you buy a Petmate kennel, if it's got the purple logo above the door with the name of the kennel on it, you'll have my artwork on it. :D )

I am definately crate training him, since he will live with me in a 1 br apartment this fall.

I have one like this:

It came with the dog when I got him. It comes apart for storage. It is very sturdy and we used it to crate train our lab and then flew him to the Caribbean and back in it. The thing is 12 years old and held up great. We hve the biggest they make and I think they are available at K-Mart.

The wire ones are more for traveling - the solid plastic ones are better for training, etc.

(In theory. Pat's dog seems to like the wire - but Patty lies all the time. And he's usually drunk. His sexuality is pretty questionable, too.)

It's got the plastic bottom to clean out the crap. I figured that if you just threw a sheet or something over the top and sides, it would be about the same as plastic sides.

That's what you'll need to do with it - use a heavy blanket that will help block light, etc.

I wouldn't. Ever been in Alabama in the summer? Especially in the 1 br apt of a broke assed college student who didn't pay the air bill?

One of them vinyl coated wire ones, but we only used it when he was a pup.

That's why the plastic ones are a little better for this sort of thing. With the kennel, it's all about making them feel secure and happy. What makes them happy is the closed-in feel (part of the denning instinct that I mentioned earlier.)

The plastic ones, by law, have to have a set percentage of open space in them so you don't have to worry about heat, air pass-thru, stale air, etc.

X 3.

I think I got mine at PetSmart. I generally don't use all of the clips that hold it together for quicker disassembly. I've found that it will fit in the trunk of most rental cars that I have used. I think it was about $80 or so 5 years ago.

I've been working for 6 months before my last semester, bills aren't the issue.

I'm not sure if they make one of the plastic types large enough for a 90 pound doberman.

We bought this one recently (~$80-90 at petsmart), it comes with a divider for crate training when they are puppies, and has 2 doors (one on front, one on side), we used to have a little smaller one with the corner drop pins (instead of folding), it was a pain to travel with compared to this one. I think a wire kennel will work just fine for training, it did for us. We did use a beach towel or blanket to cover the top and three sides, to give the dog a feeling of security/comfort. Now we have a cover for the new one, that we bought at petsmart.

i bought a wire crate and put a towel over the top. he loved it. then he decided one day he wasnt gonna sleep there anymore.
i would get the divider though. it keeps them from crapping on one side and sleeping in the other. definitely the plastic tray is the way to go. easy to clean.

Sure they do. My 90lb lab can turn around in his. If I ever start fussing at him, he beelines for the crate. He knows the "rule" that he can't be touched in there. He'll steal the other dog's bone, and hightail it to his crate, too.

How tall is it? I just want to be sure that the crate is tall enough so that he will be able to stand up in it when he gets fully grown.
