My roomate has a 1996 SR5 4runner and this little box is making a weird harmonic noise after being on for 5 minutes. More when idling. The pic show where the noise comes from. Is this something he should be concerned with? What is this box for?

A quick search on that part number comes back charc canister assembly.

We figured that out but why would it make a whining noise after being on for awhile ? It is loud enough to hear it from inside the truck

Could be that little vaccum switch. Also, there should be more hoses than that on a typical charcoal canister, check if you have any open ports. If all else fails, take it apart and see what makes it tick.

It's a common problem. Search around on yotatech for the solution. I don't remember what the deal is.

Take it to your local dealer. There's a SSC (Special Service Campaign) out on that problem, they should fix it for free. Sometimes they give you a blank stare, but keep insisting, it's in the computer system on that model, I've seen it.

It's Toyota TSB #EG002-97 "EVAP CHARCOAL CANISTER NOISE" that calls for a small $7 expansion plenum to be sticky-backed to the canister and connected .into the tubing, eliminating the farting sound.
