Hello,
I think my fuel pump is on it's way out, but I am not 100% sure. I remember that someone said the pump will start to weep when the pump is ready to go. Where does it weep from? How much gas weeps out? How can I check this? The only thing that I can add is that one day last week I smelled gas fumes in the cab when I first opened the door after it had been sitting for a few days. And I never usually get gas fumes in my truck.

Any ideas? Thanks,
Zack

The fuel pump is on the bottom of the engine block on the passenger side, near the front. It weeps from around the gasket there, not near the cab.

Have you been having trouble starting the truck? That was the first sign for me.

actaully it doesn't leak around the gasket it leaks out of the weep hole(little hole) on the bottom of the fuel pump, should notice it being wet on the bottom of the pump and prolly driping on the axle and spring.

Check the weep hole while the motor is off (just after running it)... if it leaks, it will drip or worse, pour out of the small hole (1/8") on the bottom side of the pump. If it is leaking around the gasket... remove and re-seal...

There was fuel slightly dripping out of mine, mostly just "weeping". Other symptoms were it would stall at a stop sign, but then it would warm up and seem all right. Or it would run like s**t , like a vacuum hose was off., but I checked all that. So I decided to go ahead a replace the pump, I was not sure how old it was anyway. I just got finished, and it runs alot better. One thing I did notice was the fuel filter was only half full of fuel, but after the pump replacement, it is completely full. That might be one thing to check. On to the next issue...

Zack,

Here's the easy test for a leaking fuel pump: take your hand and run it over the bottom surface of the pump and around the gaskets -- if it comes up wet and reaking of fuel, well then, case closed ;)

You may also want to inspect the soft fuel lines leading to the pump itself and also, the charcoal canister for proper function if your pump doesn't appear to be the culprit of your fumes.

Doc!

Doc,
Yes I am having starting problems. If it sits for more than a day it takes forever to start. I know that many people say that is normal. however the problem just started for me. So I think the pump is ready to go.

I would think so, yes. A new unit from Oreily's still runs about $60, so order now.

go to any decent parts store. Ask for a Carter brand fuel pump for your years Cruiser, inside the Carter box is a new OEM Toyota fuel pump for about $50, they come with the gaskets but not sure about the spacer. I have used 3 of these.......each time its OEM :)

OEM runs about $100
