What I Found In A Coolant Hose

That was out of the upper hose that goes from the thermostat housing to the radiator. The hose was "crunchy" when I squeezed it so I pulled it off and that's what I managed to remove. The hose itself seems to be in good shape except for the rust build-up. When I check the other hoses most have the same "crunchy" feeling. Obviously the guy who owned this rig in Japan rarely (if ever) changed the coolant. On the outside the radiator seems to be in good shape and anything I fill it with will drain right away and there are no leaks. I've flushed the system with some cleaner and plan to flush it a few more times.

Does anyone know if someone sells a kit that replaces every rubber coolant hose? I've seen the kit that 4WheelAuto sells but that's only 3 of the hoses I'd need.

Think it might pay to also have a look at your welsh plugs also[ think you call them frost plugs if I remember correctly.At least knock some out and check them and stick a hose in there also for a good wash out.They can rust out from the inside and you will loose your coolant quickly.

looks like he just used water as a coolant for years. I suspect your rad would be full of that stuff too, should get it checked and flushed.

i ran into a LJ71 that was simular. it had hot temps and when i pulled the rad the same crap came pouring out.

I thought you need a reall deep flush to your cooling system .. !

Yeah I'm flushing the crap out of the system and also replacing the thermostat while I'm at it. I did a search in regards to installing a aftermarket temp gauge and the port that people are hooking into on the thermostat housing, in the pictures below, which one is it?

And is there any reason most of you guys are going with mechanical gauges instead of electrical?

Factory Toyota gauge is not very good and often does not give the detailed movement based on what is going on with the temp. mechanic is quick very accurate easy to install - cheap insurance policy

I would say that build up is probably coming from the block and other water passages in the block. It is steel and is not painted so bare steel seating in water will rust over time especially if you do not use someting in coolent to prevent rust.

Actually it's iron, not steel. Most (99.9%) of engine blocks are either iron or aluminum.

What about aftermarket electrical gauges, like those from Autometer which have the sending unit in the engine bay and require just a wire run into the cab instead of a fluid filled line? In the second pic I posted, what is the single wire going into the thermostat housing for? Can't see it mentioned in the Toyota EPC or wiring diagram.

greddy sells bungs with a temp sender mount that you can splice into any rad hose.
