OK I'm thinking of SOA my 1982 BJ42 it's a 3B with a H55 ... but what gears does everyone else use I have a deal on 529'S in SOA axles... BUt I think even with the H55 it would be too much gearing.
now it's the time when you need to be honest with you .. if you are going to stay at 35" I'm agree in 4.56 .. or even stock 4.11 if you add turbo ..
But if you are going to 37" or more .. 4.88 ..
And my logic it's .. for the labor parts price .. the rpm difference I would go 4.88 in the first time .. IMOP 4.56 maybe just don't justify all the cost and time involved ..
4.88's and 40's with a turbo was pretty good, its about stock or a pinch under with htis combo, but I think the turbo makes at least the same difference as the gearing. Also, an oversized exhaust will help alot when (not if!) you turbo it.
4.56:1 with 3B H55 and 37's Im nearly geared to factory. (speedo is out by 1%ish)
If you dont do more than 90kph in the 42 and like a low geared truck go for 4.56:1's w/35" tires
If you'd like to be able to cruise at 90kph happily all day long go with 4.11:1's w/35" tires.
Some of the gassers (62's at a guess) came with this gearing. If you are on a budget, pick up some of these diffs and save yourself the cost of a re-gear.
Mine came with 4.10 and a H41 with the 33 I have know it drives nice but lacks power I figured it was A 3B thing. These axles are cheap and done but the 529's sounds like too much
For what youd gain in "offroadability" youd loose too much in top end speed that any sort of trip on the highway would be slow, loud and less pleasant.
When you turbo it you'll wonder why it wasnt at the top of your priority list in the first place though.
I have 4.10 and 33 and although the speedo is dead on it lacks power and I have to shift out of O/D on any hill. I guess I'll back burner the SOA and work on the turbo

good idea, I helped turbo a friends 60 a while back and he's enjoyed it alot more during long trips, recently we removed his exhaust just under the passenger sider door (it was rusted and broke through while wheeling)
He said since we removed half the broken stock exhaust, it runs a couple hundred degrees cooler and he doesnt have to downshift on the hills like he did before.
He goes by iggi on mud if your curious on his first hand experience and larger then stock tires with a turbo.

Good plan... You'll LOVE that turbo! I've got 4.1's and 33's and it seriously needs taller rubber! It just pulls like mad in 4th and revs too much at cruise speed (95km/u more or less). Plenty of power to pull bigger rubber or a 5th gear.
Can't fit a 5speed as I have an Orion which I'm not going to sacrifice..
