What EXACTLY is the difference between an FJ-60 & FJ-62 steering box?

Change date for the FJ60 steering box is 4/85. The 60 frame was modified to accept the 70 series box after that date.

FYI, this probably applies to the BJ series as well. I had no problem swapping my steering box between my post '85 BJ and the HJ61 frame I'm using (year unknown). The holes were already milled into the JDM frame, just needed to add sleeves. Box fit perfectly, I measured the steering box bolt pattern in my '62 and it was the same.

Thanks Tony, Jim C and Joe E,
The difference looks so small, so long as I get the angle close there is enough wiggle room in the intermediate shaft. Yes, from a square pattern to a parallelogram, you could see it right away. I will still be careful and doubel check everything. Hey Joe E, I wish you were on Long Island so I could drive over and see your project.

yep it effects the BJ frames as well. The 62 frame I put under my BJ was a gas rig (obviously...) What I found interesting is that both frames 82 BJ and 89 FJ both had the holes to put the steering box on the right side of the frame but like you found on the JDM frame no sleeves on the unused side. Sort of like the right hand side of the fire wall, lots of the needed attachment places for RHD but missing studs and nuts and cutouts to attach things.

Walt Glad we could help. Best of luck with the whole rebuild.

Best thing I can recommend, find a box out of an fzj80. It will bolt right on and give you quicker steering. :steer:

Can y'all help a brother out?

I have three separate boxes in 3 different locations (otherwise I would just try the spares on the vehicles).
One is a spare, one is on my 40, one is on my 55.
I'd like to know if my spare is compatible with the ones on my vehicle, then I an send it off for rebuild somewhere and then rotate it on my Cruisers, as they are both a little leaky at the box.
First is the spare, the other two are on the vehicles.
Thanks for your help.

From just looking at the pix:

First pic is a late type.

Second pic is an early type box.

Third pic is a late type box.

I think it will make sense - if your statements hold true, the Pig is a '74, so makes sense it has an early box, the 40 is a '78, so it should have a later box!
