I just received a 87 FJ60 with a new crate engine 2f and new 5 speed tranny. I have just put on new 235/75/15 tires and shocks. When I was installing the shocks I noticed that the rear axle sat about 2 1/2" from the bump stop. I am assuming this is due to age and milage (192K). I really don't want to do a lift kit as I have just done the tires and shocks. Will a AAL kit and shackles get me through a couple of years of street driving and very, very, mild trail use maybe 2x a year? If this will work can someone recommend a set-up that they have used for shackles? I will be doing the long AAL from Man-a-fre if this will work. I am just confused about the shackles and axle shims. Please help.

Use a 'helper' spring leaf or get your springs re-arched.

Find someone putting a lift on their truck and get their springs. You can add an AAL and get a nice stance to get you through the next couple years. Shackle lifts will affect caster whereas the AAL shouldn't.

If you're going to pull the spring pack to add a leaf, you should also get them re-arched at this time. This will give you a decent amount of lift without costing a lot and it will last for about two years. I'm not a fan of extended shackles, but greasable shackles and new bushings will certainly smooth out the ride for you.
