That is just weird.
apparently it's a thing!

Many European cars, particularly those with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, utilize a flex disc, also known as a guibo, to connect the driveshaft to the transmission and/or differential. This flexible coupling helps absorb vibration and allow for small movements between the drivetrain components.

Common European Brands:
  • Mercedes-Benz: Many Mercedes-Benz models, including those with AMG performance engines, use flex discs.

  • BMW: BMW vehicles, particularly those with rear-wheel drive, frequently employ flex discs.

  • Volvo: Some Volvo models also utilize flex discs in their drivetrain.

  • Jaguar: Jaguar models, like other European marques, may incorporate flex discs.
Function of a Flex Disc:
  • Dampening Vibration:
    .Opens in new tab

Flex discs are designed to absorb and dampen vibrations that can occur during driving, especially when the drivetrain components are not perfectly aligned.

  • Allowing Movement:

The flexible nature of the flex disc allows for some movement between the driveshaft, transmission, and differential, accommodating changes in alignment and load.

  • Connecting Shafts:

Flex discs connect the flanges (the attachment points) of the input and output shafts, ensuring that power is transferred from the engine to the wheels.

Corvettes use these also, albeit in torque tubes

Removed this non-functional aftermarket alarm system. It was an unnecessary drain on the battery.

With the 60 on jack stands you can really see how bad the damage is on this leaf.

Currently trying to separate the old steering damper from the frame using a ball joint separator and a rubber mallet but it won't budge. Spraying a bunch of penetrating oil didn't seem to help much. Unsure what to do.

Successfully got them out with a ball joint press.

I don’t envy you doing that in the driveway with limited tools. I wish I could help you out and offer my place but I’ve got two down and tons to do myself. You hit a roadblock text me I’ll see what I can do.

Finally dropped the upper oil pan on Beastie, and wrapped up the project with a replacement pan yesterday. Glad this project is over. She's back on the road. :bounce:

Nicely done! If you need to borrow tools, just ask. With a little planning we might be able to provide an extra set of hands or two.
Im planning on spending friday-monday this upcoming weekend throwing the leaf springs on if anyone is free to lend a hand. Just DM for my number and I can send my location. I'll need to borrow a torch and possibly an angle grinder.

What time on Friday? Are you removing and installing bushings?

Yeah, I'm removing all the shackle bushings which are extremely dry and cracked and quite possibly glued on. I'll be working probably all day but I'll start kind of early to avoid being blasted by the sun - 8 or 9. You can stop by anytime in the morning if you can.

Anyone reading this have experience with this project? What tools have you used? Always good to have plan A, B, C, etc.
