Put the 37's on the 45 a couple months ago so I could wheel GSMTR and keep my fenders straight on the 80. Turrns out they look real good :D So I took the wheel spacers off to narrow the track since Im not running the tundra wheels anymore and these steelies have lots plenty of BS.

Took the 80 up the road to help layout a new private rock garden. Something like 500 tons of stone to work with and a giant dozer. Happy Days. Got to lay the first tire mark on the stone but really have a looooooong way to go with construction. Figure 8 layout with two stone end arcs ( ). Should be fun. Strapped a canoe up top just to finish off the day's work and took the brown multi beast swimming in the Dan river.

should have been doing the axle build, the stuck drain bolt removal, the power seat fix, etc etc

We had a eye opening experience on the way home from the Jocassee trip Sunday afternoon. After stopping off to visit a friend near Athens, GA, we hopped back on I-85 and continued south. The traffic was simply stupid. Everybody would be doing 60+ mph and then brake lights would start lighting up for no apparent reason (unless going uphill is a valid reason). No accidents or blue lights - just people hopping lanes or driving too slow or something.

The second time it happened I was in the left lane and cars came to a complete stop in front of me. I hit the brakes hard (but not hard enough to kick in the ABS) and at the last moment thought I might not make it, so I pulled left onto the shoulder about halfway. Partly I was worried the car behind me wouldn't stop in time too - just gut instinct told me I should dive into the shoulder and there was plenty of pavement and grass to do so. My driver tires hit the rumble strip and we came safely to a stop. I look in my rearview and see the Civic behind me stopped too. So now I refocus on the cars in front of me and see that the 20 or so cars are now starting to roll forward. I start to turn back into my lane but I'm barely moving forward when out of the passenger window I see the Civic go shooting by.

My first thought was Wow! she's not even going to let me back in my lane?! But then I saw that she was on the shoulder in front of me with a smashed trunk and she clipped her driver side rearview on my rub rails - Cat and I did feel the mirror hit, but it didn't sink in right away. I look back out my rearview again and see a big cream colored Hyundai SUV/minivan thing with his front end pushed in and his rear bumper hanging off the back. Behind him is a little silver compact car - Corolla or Sentra type thing. The little silver compact is completely folded up in the front and he apparently bounced off the rear of the Hyundai minivan and landed in the left shoulder. Amazingly he got out completely unharmed. Nobody was really freaked out, which was refreshing. The girl who was driving the Civic was the last of the domino chain and because we pulled onto the shoulder we were in the middle of it, but not really involved. She got out and thought she had totally crunched our passenger side door, but was relieved when I told her that was old damage (from GSMTR). I started putting all the pieces together on what happened and thought, Wow, we really dodged a bullet here.

The cops show up just a few minutes later and make sure no one is injured and talk to each of us. Everybody's story was matching up apparently and no body is laying blame or pointing angry fingers. When he got back to me he looked at the damage on my truck and said, "Did this happen here?"
I again said, "no, this is all old trail damage."
He says, "So you won't be needing a report, right?"
I said, "Not at all."
"Then you can go."

The girl in the Civic I'm sure could still drive. Not sure about the minivan, since his exhaust system took a lot of damage. The little silver compact was going to have to scooped up and hauled off. If I had stayed on the road I probably would have stopped in time, but Dig-Dug surely would have left the girl's Civic undriveable. She would have run her hood up into and under my steel bumper.

Glad I made the decision to pull off the road when I did, but also makes me frustrated that people can be so bullheaded on the highway and cause accidents to happen 20-25 cars back without even knowing it. Be safe out there guys and stayed focused on driving.

I got into a fender bender myself on Saturday. I on my way to work heading out of Easly on 123 towards Clemson. I was crusing in the right hand lane doing about 45, the other vehicle was in the left land doing 35-40ish. About the time the nose of my truck was past his trunk area I notice he was drifting over. I planned on giving the horn a little toot to remind him to stay in his lane (nothing new round here) By the time I was able to get my hand on the horn he was completely over the line so I was laying on the horn, our front ends now about even. I now realize he probably isnt going to stop so i try to accelerate past but he cut even harder (he was attempting to exit 123 onto 135 from the left lane) and his passenger door made contact with my left rear tire.

My only damage was to the left rear plastic and some new scuffs on the rim/tire. It could of been a lot worse as when he made contact it was in a spot where the road began banking left and instead of continuing down 123 I went with it and got off the exit ramp.

Damage to his car started and the passenger door mirror pulled forward and a flat tire.

Upon stepping out of my truck and approaching the other driver, he was basically telling me I was at fault. He said he saw me and had his turn signal on, which there was no turn signal (not using turn signals is a pet peeve of mine) on or he turned it on when I was already beside him, and that I should of gotten out of his way. Seeing that there would be no talking to this man I basically said "No sir this is your fault, and we will contact the authorities." Whom showed up shortly there-after. He ran up to the officer first I just stayed beside my vehicle and to officer came up to me after the other driver had his say. I told him what happened, and the other driver was found to be at fault.

Of coarse small world as it may be as I was getting ready to pull out Steve called me as he saw me over there. Made me smile Thanks Steve!

Plastic piece pushed in looks like it caught on the tire and pulled it in.

The wife and I are always on the look out for Cruisers. You see, we play this game call "Punch Cruiser." Any Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser, or well built 4Runners or Tacos count. I had to stand my ground when the :princess: said 100's don't count (Steen???)...

Yup, Lumina w/ bald tires... has to be his fault!

"But you should have gotten out of my way....waaaaah..." :bang:

Glad everyone was OK. When I saw you on the side of the road I was going to turn around but was in traffic. I hoped for the other car's sake he didn't rear end you with your tow hook sticking out. That would have made for a very very bad day for him.

She must have meant Hyundia... sounds kind of the same as Hundy. :grinpimp:

I know your :princess: and she's a lot smarter than that!

Well while most of you guys were at the the lake swimming in the cool water, drinking, fishing, etc. I was working non-stop in the inferno that is Augusta, 100* plus everyday...... :bang: I put in over 36 hours of non-stop work from Fri-Sun on the 80... as it is now my DD after we traded my BMW in so the :princess: could get a new car.

Anyways, with the wife out of town all weekend I figured it was a great time to sneak in a bunch of work and upgrades on the cruiser without her knowing:grinpimp: I ordered new fuel injectors, fan clutch, thermostat, and new 3.5 speakers to replace the blown/rotted factory ones. But the upgrade I am stoked about the most was linning the whole interior and doors with Dynamat, as the 80 has gotten a lot noiser with age, and I am missing the ultra smooth and quite ride of my BMW.

The fuel injectors made a huge difference, as the engine idles silky smooth now and is so much quiter; can't wait to do some MPG testing... I am hoping to gain a couple of mpgs since the other injectors had 200k on them and I am sure they were pretty clogged up.

I stuffed Dynamat inside every nook and cranny I could get it into.... doors and wheel wells included

DSC_0483.jpg

and the new 3.5" speakers I installed.... there were 4 of them two in the front of the 80 and two in the rear and for such small speakers they made a huge difference in the fullness of the sound.

It was a long hot weekend, but the 80 is happy and so am I.... looking forward to using it as my DD

are you going to do behind the headliner also?

That depends on how successful this installation was. I haven't actually gotten to drive it yet as I have to finish up a few loose ends after work today, but if there is a marked improvement in road noise I'll just let the headliner be. I don't need the 80 to be lexus quite just want to be able have a normal conversation at highway speeds :hillbilly:

But the added benefit of doing the roof is keeping heat out :)
