So yesterday I pulled the head from the 1HZ that is going into the troopy. And I dropped it off at a new machine shop that seems head and shoulders above anything else I have seen in Dubai. I was pointed to it by a guy who does nothing but high-end stuff.

Custom snorkel time. 3” stainless for the FT to get fresh air. Took awhile to mark a cut the holes in the fender. I ended up 3D printing parts of the snorkel so I can trim them to mark the body.

Had some not-so-great news from the machine shop today re the 1HZ head I dropped off on Friday.

Exhaust valve:

Exhaust valve after grinding:

Pitting remains. And this was one of the very best valves.

And the valve guides are shot too:

So it will be a new set of valves for this engine, and valve guide inserts too.

Today I got up in the middle of the night and ordered a Grade 5 head gasket and Engine Australia was kind enough to sell me just two sets of piston rings for Schrodinger the 105's 1HZ. I figured better to get two two sets in case I break a ring again on the last piston. We also made some progress on putting more of the engine together.

And on the Troopy engine's head I got a couple of photos from the machine shop:

Had to be decked 0.1 mm to get rid of a 0.08 warp. I'm a little worried about it because when I measured the piston protrusion I got between 0.50 and 0.63 mm and the head gasket I have for this one is a little thin for that, even before the .1 skim of the head:

I intend to use a Grade 3 on this engine because it is what I have. But I won't be boosting this engine much. Hope I don't run into valve clearance issues. Perhaps we will measure when we get the head back.

machining the head shouldn't matter for headgasket thickness. Your machine shop should set all the vales deeper into the head after its machined. Decking the block is what you need to be worried about. Seems like your measuring protrusion so you should be fine.

Thank you TB. Thinking it through, what you say makes sense. Waiting for the machine shop to complete the head.

While I am at it I am having the exhaust manifold flanges faced. They are pretty bad.

Getting close on the Schrodinger engine. DHL says the rings I need will arrive in the morning.

I happened to go to Sharjah today to look for an ECU. While I was there I dropped into a couple of my favorite scrap yards. Happened to see the other extreme of 1HZ rebuilding. I was poking around the warehouse when he rode up on a bike with the hot water tube, obviously new, and proceeded to install it. He used lubricant on the press fit end and was exercising care.

He seemed to know what he was doing.
