I had a 13Bt in my 60. It lasted 450k miles and blew a ring. Kept running but hard start and smoke. Went through the same process and had the luck to find a 15BFT with 100k miles for less then a full rebuild of he 13Bt. I don’t regret doing it but it was a bit more work. If you can find one it’s highly recommend. The other option is moving in the next gen. 1Hx.Today is a sad day. My beloved BJ74 is in need of a heart transplant. Apparently, engine (13bt; 200km) is shot. Options are a rebuild or a replacement engine. Would appreciate all thoughts from folks much more knowledgeable than myself. Not excited about the spend on a rebuild. Also aware the 13bt is increasingly hard to find parts for. I'm in Georgia, so one of my first calls was to the kind folks at odd iron. They suggested a 1HZ as an alternative. Throwing it out there for thoughts on an approach and also in the hopes this wide net may land me an engine........ thanks in advance.
depends on your budget of course, but I hear that a 1HZ + H55f is a great combo. Go up the 1Hx family for turbo and more power.Today is a sad day. My beloved BJ74 is in need of a heart transplant. I have on my troopy a 1HDFT/H152. It is ****ing fantastic. The acceleration in any gear is insane. Even in 5th gear at 35-40 mph I can step on the gas and it just go. Freeway you never shift down, no matter the incline. Took it to 90 mph and it kept going. I just stopped. RPM 2600. It has a calibrated 80 series speedo very accurate.depends on your budget of course, but I hear that a 1HZ + H55f is a great combo. Go up the 1Hx family for turbo and more power.
close. 20-25mpg. I actually tuned it to throw puffs of black smoke when I press the gas fast. Tesla tailgating me gets that every time. In fact in the military we used to inject diesel right after the turbo to create huge white clouds instead of smoke grenades. I am seriously thinking about that, because more than 50% of the cars here are Teslas. And... they drive like assholes. You left out that it returns 60mpg and blows cleaner air out the tailpipe than what goes in the intake![]()
Right? Like we don't have enough envy already. You left out that it returns 60mpg and blows cleaner air out the tailpipe than what goes in the intake![]()
no envy here, been there and done that. cool factor is about all they have going for them.Right? Like we don't have enough envy already.
The 1hdt of dreams(even at 16 mpg)...maybe someday?

No. I did. It needed some trimming inside the cluster. I used the speed sender on the HF2A and did a custom harness. The reason is that the speedo has an output to the 80 cruise control and I’m trying to implement it. Also an electric speedo (in mph as well) is much more stable then the original.Did Georg do your speedo?

and dreams even at 16 mpg,,, really? its good we have options for different dreams.
Onur, you said driving without shifting. My son works for Waymo, the Google self driving car. I took a few rides. They are here all over the Bay Area. No driver and you are not suppose to touch the steering wheel. It is mind boggling. That is the future.. Preach.
Toyota diesel conversions are dumb.
Unless one has money and that money is irrelevant to the outcome: IE: you have money to fund a factory diesel conversion.
A Toyota diesel conversion will cost more than buying an entire vehicle, here in the US, in 2026.
That said: there is intensity for every experience; I am not trying to downplay someone’s human experience.
We are in the last throes of the ICE period of human history with regards to mobility.
The idea of cars that we drive and shift gears in with a stick shift is going to be gone in less than 10 yrs…. Maybe 5-7
We ain’t many.
I think we all need to enjoy what we have here. The future is going to be very fūcking different, very shortly.
I am not a fan of the 1HZ. Sure it will run a long long time on piss & vinegar and sure it is simple so easy to work on. That is where the magic ends for me.
If I lived in a country where the top speed is 50mph, I would perhaps own and drive an HZJ Cruiser. I don't though and for me to go somewhere I have to travel on the highway so I need to be able to go at least 70mph, I prefer 75mph minimum so I can at least not get blown off the road by the semi trucks.
We work on them though and I get what I want or need is not for everyone. Hey anyone shopping for a 1HZ/H55 combo I will have one for sale before to much longer that appears to be in good condition. I will compression test it before sale of course.
Cheers
Although I’m sure there are better choices when it comes to diesel engines (from a power standpoint), I had good luck adding a turbo and Intercooler to my 1HZ’s (one in an automatic 77 Series, the other in a manual 79 Series).Couldn't have said it any better. As someone that spent very little time in higher elevation, I was in a for a very rude awakening driving the HZJ77 in Colorado.
For short drives around South Texas, it does the job however.

In the interest of full disclosure, there are no mountains in Southwest Georgia.![]()

In my case, one was a new 1HZ from Toyota while the other one only had 58,000 kms on it, so I decided to stick with what I had. I’m old and drive like an old guy, so going fast doesn’t hold the appeal it once did.I would rather just spend the extra coin to go 1HDT or 1HDFT than turbo the 1HZ based off what I have read over the years here on 'mud since either will almost just bolt in into an existing 1HZ platform is my understanding.
