Today is a sad day. My beloved BJ74 is in need of a heart transplant. Apparently, engine (13bt; 200km) is shot. Options are a rebuild or a replacement engine. Would appreciate all thoughts from folks much more knowledgeable than myself. Not excited about the spend on a rebuild. Also aware the 13bt is increasingly hard to find parts for. I'm in Georgia, so one of my first calls was to the kind folks at odd iron. They suggested a 1HZ as an alternative. Throwing it out there for thoughts on an approach and also in the hopes this wide net may land me an engine........ thanks in advance.

As someone who rebuilt my 13bt 5 years ago and over 40k miles , I’d have a hard time fully rebuilding one again. Mine runs excellent, but even with an upgraded turbo it lacks power and of course the bigger issue is lack of parts like head/crank/cam/block etc.

If you are going full hog on the rebuild, you’d be better money ahead on like a 14b/15b swap as it’s pretty close to bolt in and has much better parts availability.

If you just want it running good again, they are tough and usually a head gasket or pistons/etc will let them run on quite a bit longer. Especially if it’s a 2nd or 3rd vehicle.

Swap really depends on what you do with this thing.

1HDT. That's what I'm doing when my 13BT lays down.

Or, maybe a GM LS. Much better exhaust note.

I consider LS like breast implants. Some people like. 🤷‍♂️

Installed the rear heater. 8” 24V brushless fan connected to a thermostat. It blows air through a small computer radiator that is being fed 195F coolant from the Espar heater which is mounted behind the fuel tank. Calculated heat should be enough for the bottom cab. If we leave the hatch open on the upper bed, I think heat will get there.

Aluminum panel powder coated courtesy of @orikawa. Thank Spencer. I’ll see you in a month.
The grill 3D printed ASA.

back before computers needed fans and radiators i did similar with a small motorcycle radiator/fan, it worked great. had to put a resistor or maybe rheostat? on the fan to slow it down,,,, alot.

it's spring here, which means summer is approaching, which also means camping trips with my LJ73 are soon to be here !

- replaced the batteries (one was from 2017 and the other from 2020. wow, they held up well...)
- changed the oil / oil filter.
- changed the air filter.

Did the timing belt coolant flush and fan belts with all OEM gear, I didn’t know exactly when the TB was done last as it was smudged off the sticker, belt looked pretty good but for peace of mind. Noticed old oil around the throttle body and rocker cover area, so I think that’s next job to clean it out and EGR del, hopefully nothing worse than that, maybe get a new rocker gasket while I’m there?

On our trip to the Western Alps last summer, my buddy behind me complained my rig would blow puffs of blue oil smoke on load changes.
So I did the valve stem seals on my 3B today, and also changed the Engine oil.
I used the 'compressed air in cylinder' method. Worked out well and it's running smooth again.
Was a bit of a pain to get the keepers back in, though, as the toolset I have is designed for smaller engines. The tool isn't compressing the springs exactly vertically, so the gap around the stem frequently closes up, and the diameter of the tool is also quite small.

Now I need my buddy to drive behind me again, to confirm she still puffs blue smoke, so the entire exercise was for the birds 😂.
Cheers Ralf
