I'm looking for info on what FJ40's cost new, particularly in the first few years they were available in the US. I'm interested in comparing original prices with those of Scout 80's from the same era in order to confirm a theory I've been propounding recklessly for the last few months.

Is there a good collection of early sales literature available online somewhere?

Cheers, JD

Not sure what your trying to figure out but it's been discussed how Toyota priced the FJ40 out of the market in the eighties to sell more mini 4X4 truck which had better gas mileage. Towards the end a FJ40 was almost as much as a FJ60. For price in the sixties I would have to look at some of my titles but I think the price was just over $2,000 in 1960 and around $3,200 in 1970.

I love it!

Thanks for the great info everyone! I love those original adverts JohnnyC--that's a great collection.

I'm actually surprised at how reasonable the early prices were, but they still confirm my suspicions about the different niche markets that the Scout 80 and early FJ40's would have been directed at. I may elaborate later.

Thanks a million guys!

So how much was a '64 scout 80?

this is a comparison from 69

1964 Scout 80 Advert

The Scout 80 model was produced from '61-65 and late '65 marked the beginning of the 800 model and a major departure from the original philosophy of the Scout as I understand it. By '69, the Scout was available with about six different engines and various options and different trim packages.

I think this advert is from 1964 and it shows the stripped down Scout 80 with the different tops that were available, but it only came with a slant 152 4-cilynder, T-90 trans and Dana-18 T-case. Most of their early adverts focused on the versatility and the economy of the Scout--not claiming serious power or uh-heard-of off-road capabilities like the FJ40. According to this ad, the Scout achieved 20mpgs and only cost $1,690.85 in it's simplest configuration. My hunch is that they were eventually forced to offer bigger engines and tougher running gear to compete with FJ40/CJ, but I'm not a historian and it's just speculation on my part.

I'd be interested in what others think:

I love the old 80 Scouts, and love their old ads. I know of a '64 hiding in a barn (I like the '64 door windows more than the '63's) and I can probably get it for around $1500, in non-running, rusted condition...but with papers!!!

Not bad...the truck lost only $190 in 47 years :D

Edit: This is what I would want it to look like once finished...and I have the green light from my wife to go ahead (she also likes the early 45SWB) ... not too sure yet, as I had other plans, so we'll see.

$2953.00 out the door. June 1, 1967.

I have the green light from my wife to go ahead

I have always loved Scouts and FJ40's, for different reasons, but LC's were just out of my price range until I became an adult. I drove two different Scouts in high school and jr. college and my wife actually has a soft spot for Scouts because when we met in high school (16 years ago) I used to pick her up in my Scout on the way to youth group; so I also have permission to add a Scout 80 to the garage if I can ever find the right one.

Scouts and FJ40's make an interesting comparison because they were both 4x4 utility vehicles introduced to the American market at the same time, but apparently with different objectives in mind--and they are very different rigs. In my mind the FJ40 put a premium on capability and durability, and the Scout 80 represented simplicity and economy. But again, I'm not a historian.

Very cool...let us know if and when you find one!

Here is an early 40 price sheet I found somewhere (for a 1962 40 I believe) ... hope this helps

I need to search to see. Maybe the 1960 FJ25s were more than I remember. With POE at the end of the price I wonder how much it cost to ship one to the middle of the country back in 1962?

Looked at a few AZ titles which have the base price listed on the title.

In the early sixties prices were all over. Maybe price was listed as what the vehicle sold for:meh:

1960 FJ25s (4) $1680,$1900,$2390,$3050 all soft top models. Two have a first reg dates. 5/1960 was $2390 AND 12/60 was $3050 All but the $1900 one which was originally from California had PTO winches from the Factory.

1962 FJ40LV first reg ? $2000 This was from Colorado and I question how they came up with $2000 on the title.
1965 FJ45LP-B first reg 4/1965 $2750
1968 FJ40LV first reg 11/67 $3050
1970 FJ40LV first reg 4/70 $3050
1971 FJ40LV first reg 5/71 $3245
1973 FJ40L first reg 8/73 $3342 soft top model
1979 FJ40LV first reg 11/79 $6101 no power steering or A/C

By 1983 I believe the list price had at least doubled what the price was in 79.

Just for kicks: if Toyota continued production of the '79 FJ40 to present day with no major changes...what would it be worth today?:doh::doh:
