Hello, I have one of those ultragauges, it works great and is good for the piece of mind of knowing your true coolant temps.

What are those of you guys with the ability to read actual temps running at?

Mine stays between 185 and 195 while driving and 190 while idling.

Just wanted to see if I was running a little on the cooler side.

Thanks in advance,

Shane

Currently with winter temps, I am running between 181 and 190. Those numbers are via my ScanGauge II

With 34°F ambient temps, I see around 190°(±5°) around town. If I get out on the interstate, or at speeds over 55mph, it'll usually settle down closer to 180°. Idling, it'll creep up to the 197/198° mark.

This is measured with a digital gauge, sending unit mounted in the water neck near the distributor.

Drove my 80 for the first time after an engine swap. New OE parts everywhere except the radiator which has been treated with Toyota red for many years before I got it. Stock 1997 FZJ80 fan clutch with new 10k fluid.

Idles: 177°
Driving in town: 179°

This was driving around in 40°F temps. Numbers came to me via SGII.

Not to hi-jack, but where is the best location for that sensor in a 80 ?

Using a SGII, with winter temps (freezing or lower) I am at 180 F +/- a degree or two while cruising around town, 185 or a little higher is possible for large hill climbs.

in the fall temps (up to 70 or so F) I was cruising at 185 or higher and up to 195 on long hills.

My conclusion is that I need to do the fluid swap in the fan clutch as the rest of the cooling system is less than a year old with new rad, fluid flush, water pump, tstat, hoses etc. Now I need some warmer weather to work on the darn thing....ironic.

jeffro109, if you do some searching you will find that your temps are in the normal operating range. Tool R Us has some excellent write ups on this very subject.

X2 what Flank said...tons of summer discussion on this topic!

A little help please

New to 80's I hear they have some fluky temp gauges. Is it the sender or the gauge.

What is the Scan gauge people are talking about?

I have some issues with temp, pretty sure it's thermostat sticking open & being finicky.

Thanks

Around Sacramento, CA - Outside temp about 50-60

Cruiser runs between 194F (driving) and 203F (idle)

Search, search, search....and you shall receive!

A ScanGauge will not help you gjh as they only work with OBD-II vehicles.

The problem with the gauge is that it has been neutered. It will sit there placidly, until suddenly hitting into the red when it may well be too late to avoid a bigger problem than over heating.

There is a mod developed by RavenTai, along with the help of other MUDders, that will perk up the gauge, allowing you to accurately monitor engine temps, even without the ScanGauge. Search and you'll find it. Takes a couple of hours, once you have the parts in hand, but is really pretty simple after you get over the idea of taking the dash cluster apart. Works great.

EDIT: OK, reading a little closer, not sure if the original mod works for the 3FE, but there are some leads in the article that may help.

Yep, I did some discussing in another topic about the fan clutch. I don't get much roar or tons of air movement, and the fan clutch is the first suspect at this point. More PM than anything since it is all still "OK" but I would rather get it done than run into trouble towing something in August up a hill.

Both my 80's read anywhere between 175-181 on the Scangauge. They also have modded blue hub fan clutches w/ 10K fluid.

level driving on the highway @ 75mph, my ultragauge says 181.4. Its pretty cold here lately though (20-45 degrees). During this summer, I was in 95-100 degree days and it stayed around 195 while driving, jumped a little at idle. I just replaced my radiator, so I am interested to see if there is any difference this summer.

My fan clutch appears to be stuck "on". constantly spinning at the same speed as the belt. it's been added to the list......

my ultra guage is giving me temps of about 184-189 for normal driving with current ambients floating around 4-8* C. usually its dialled in at about 185 once it warms up on my way to work. aftermarket hayden fan clutch, running toyota red.

My observation is; running temp, cool weather, low load, at thermostat opening is 188-192F or 190F ish.:hillbilly: What some are likely seeing is the cooling effect of the heaters. They are basically electric fan driven radiators, they are not regulated by the thermostat, if they were you would not have cabin heat until the thermostat opened. Try this; when full warmed, turn off the heaters, my experience is, the coolant temp will rise to thermostat temp 190F ish.

Climate control has a significant effect. When the A/C cycles on, radiator fan output temp raises ~20-30F. When the heater(s) come on coolant temp drops.

Kevin you are spot on, I have tested this many times in various ambient temps with similar results.

I am running between 180 and 185... now that I can measure it. :grinpimp:
