what am I doing wrong???? FJ62 Oil Pan

So I've been surfing this site for a month or and decided to jump on in. Great site by the way & very informative.

So here the situation, I have an 88' FJ62. I recent started working on it. I wanted to replace the Oil Pan gasket and clean the sludge out of the pan.


I got the pan detached from the engine, Looks like someone replace the gasket before me. Thats still attached to the bottom of the engine.
**** How do you get the Pan from around the Oil Pump? Is there a certain way of wiggling it out, a tilt & direction? I thought this was pretty straight forward.



I have the Toyota books. Is there a page that better describes this? The info, I refrence to, had the engine removed.


Am I asking to many questions? Sorry.
 
Remove the oil pan outlet pipe, then the oil pump, then pull the pan. You are catching on it because it is still attached.

Now then, How do I do this? Doesn't seem like theres much room for me to reach in there. Or am I looking at it wrong? Any Links or Pictures on doing Removing the Oil pan outlet pipe or Oil Pump install. Anyone??:beer:
 
Sorry pal, no pictures. If it was easy, anybody could do it. Wedge yourself up in there, get the right size wrench and go to it. The pan won't come off until you do. It is ok to let the bolts and pump fall in to the pan, just don't lose parts.
 
What is your pan hitting on? The Axle?

If so, put a high lift jack on your font bumper and jack it up as high as you need to. Use frame stands to secure the body and then remove the pan.

I'll try that when I get home. I have a One of those Jacks. The front of the pan does hit the front axle. There doesn't seem to be enough room to drop it off. While inside the pan, it gets caught on the Oil Pump. Very Frustrating.

I think that might do the trick. Just a couple more inches should clear it. I have the truck up Ramps. That could be it.:hhmm:

Sounds to me like that will do the trick. I have ~2" of lift, and I had no trouble getting my pan off.

It's alot easier if you've got the truck up on a frame lift (or jackstands holding it by the frame). That way the front axle hangs low enough for you to move the pan straight down just far enough to clear the oil pump pickup. Luckily for me, the frame lift at the auto shop on base was available when I did that, so I was able to do the job standing up :D
 
I just did this a couple of months ago on my '89. I jacked the Cruiser up as far as I could and placed jack stands under the frame rails. I removed the tires and let the front end droop as much as I could...the pan came right out without incident. Also, removing the tires also makes it easier to slide in/out from under the rig.

Please, as one decent human being to another, do not be tempted to use anything other than a Toyota gasket. The brain damaged I suffered after farting around with some stupid aftermarket gasket left me unable to feed or bath myself for several months.

X2 on the OE gasket. Be sure to get the ONE PIECE that will make your life MUCH EASIER!!!!!!
I had a BITCH of a time getting the pan re seated. I literally had to WEDGE my knee on the pan for leverage and press as hard as I could against it to get the first couple of bolts started.
However, the leak (which I thought was the rear main) I had is GONE, so it was worth the effort.

Will do. Looks like I'm going to need a new pan. I'm glad i took it off, I clean it up and noticed bubbling under the paint on the inside.

Any suggestions on where to get a decent priced pan. Or does someone have one in the Warmer part of the country, that wants to sell one..

It's painted on the inside? I must not be understanding what you're saying. It is not uncommon for rust to get though where the shield is spot welded to the bottom of the pan, that's what happened to my old 2F. If there is enough good steel it could be welded.
 
I also had to replaced my oil pan and gasket because of rust/leaking issues. I ended up going w/new oem pieces. My dealer gives me 20% off so that made my decision easy.
X2 on what Chicago said...I too had a hell of a time getting the first couple of bolts started. It's definetly worth the effort though.
Also, I'll echo what the others said in that you can't beat oem Toyota quality.
 
Read your FSM and torque the bolts in sequence and too the proper torque.

After you drive it a bit, retorque the bolts to the reqomended torque again. The oils will soak into the gasket material adn you will think the bolts came loose and it will leak.
 
I got my gear (pan and gasket) from crusier dan here on the board. Dont recall what I paid for it though.
I had a rust leak from the DS of the pan...very unusual I thought.:hhmm:
