You wont regret the 4"inch lift......I hope you got some longer brake lines for the FF and RR you will need it 100%......if you go on bilsteins website on there application chart they have 5100S specifically for a FJ40 with a 4"inch lift kit.....it is valved for your 40. Dont forget to post the BEFORE and AFTER pictures of your ride.......ENJOY.

This will at least give you a starting point for the Bilstein shocks. Bilstein -check here for all the lengths. The shocks I went with are:

BE5-6248-H5 for the rear - 25.93" extended and 15.91 compressed. Travel of 10.17".

BE5-6253-H5 for the front - 22.5" extended and 14.06 compressed. Travel of 8.6"

[/quote]

Just curious about the front shocks. Stock has a compressed length about 11.5", the shocks do not bottom out because of the bump stops. So do the 4" lift springs not compress enough to cause the 3.5" longer compressed length shocks to act as the bumpstop/limit uptravel? Obviously the stockers are too short on the extended length though so taller shock towers and longer shocks are a reasonable solution, or taller bumpstops :meh:.

EDIT: was quoting FF LC Freak.

would the ome shocks be long enough?

OME shocks N76 (LONG TRAVEL SHOCKS)
compressed length 15.91
fully extended length 26.72
total travel 10.80

4 inch

Im sure your cruiser will be pretty in pink not 10 cents!;)

I am sure you will be happy with the 4 inch, it gives you more flexibility with tire size and is better than jacking it up on the shackles IMHO.

Now think long and hard about tires----33 or 35? Mud or AT?
Interco, BFGs?:lol::lol:

Easy. 33" BFG M/T.

How many 4+" fuel lines will I need? I have disc in the front and drums in the rear.

Marlin has much better prices on SS lines. Great customer service.

Why is that? I'm having buyers remorse. Make me feel better. i almost feel I should have chosen the OME.

Like others have said, a 4" lift gives you more flexibility with tire size. IMO, it also looks better. I was debating much like you were before I bought my lift. Now that I have it (for almost 2 years now), I am very glad that I went with the 4". I have 33x12.50 BFG Mud Terrain tires and can fit in the garage, and I don't have any body rub at all when completely flexed. I could probably get away with 35s with zero body rub, also.

You are right. You need to limit up travel somewhat if you keep your stock shock towers. The problem is, you will have a very hard time finding shocks with a compressed length of 11.5" and an extended length of 26" (if you do the math you'll see why - 14.5" of travel in a 11" shock body - doesn't really work). That is why a lot of guys go with the Ford shock towers.

In my situation, my shackles bottom out before my shock does. I need to get some extended bumpstops, but I just haven't yet. :meh: I don't usually wheel hard enough to completely compress the suspension. When I do, it's very low speed. Its something to think about, though.

Zach's brother. Who dat is?

I'd recommend Kroil over any other penetrant, and spray the bejebus outta the pins, etc.

I found that the left over OME shocks I had from my OME lift were a tad short, as they are designed for a 2.5" lift, not a 4" lift. I'd opt for the Bilsteins in this case. You'll want to keep the block in the RR spring to avoid the cruiser lean. If you find that it squats in the rear after a while, you can go to longer shackles as I did. If you can find greasable shackle pins that don't have pressed in zerks, I'd go that way.

I also heartily recommend MAF's ubolt flip kits.

FWIW - I have not steering stabilizer on the front of my 40.

When I converted to 60 series PS I had to source a different size stabilizer. I never did as there is no need.

Once you install your lift , go down to the front end/alignment shop and have them measure your caster angle. I was negative one or two degrees after lifting with a 4" lift. I went with 4 degree shims and she feels much more stable now, esp on the interstate.

x2 on applying PB Blaster or other penetrant now

PS: When I installed my lift kit I opted to flip the rear spring pack to gain wheelbase. I recomend that you at least consider this before installing lift kit. Readup on spring flip and/or click the link in my signature to get to my Lift Thread.

Esp. since your rear fenders are already cut, whats a little more gonna hurt? It will make it much better on road and offroad. Since the HFS springs have a military wrap on both ends, it would be really easy to just install them backwards and gain 2.5"-4" of extra wheelbase. Your gonna have to ext. your driveshafts anyways, so you might as well go ahead and do it now.

HaHaHa. It's been in the shop for half that time.
I won't be getting the lift for couple of weeks due to Christmas and New Years.
