I have a 72 FJ-40 with an F engine, Weber progressive carb and MAF header, stock ignition. It runs well at my local elevation and usual rides under 2500 ft. Next week I will be in the Sierra's at or over 7500 ft. Should I take some smaller jets with me anticipating trouble or should I be OK. I've never had it that high and don't want to have a bad week.
PS: I don't have the stock carb in my parts pile

Thanks for any help.

I had a lot of trouble with mine when I changed altitudes. I live at 7,300' and going up or down was a real pain. I would take smaller jets if you have them just in case. I had the most trouble going down with mine as ir would backfire through the carb all the time with high altitude jets so make sure you swap back before you drop.

I live in Colorado at nearly 6000ft, and I drive my 40 up to 12,000ft + I have never had a need to rejetting the carb. You'll most likely run a little rich, but not a big deal. I wouldn't even consider worrying about the carb if it is running well unless you plan to spend significant time above 10k feet.

On a Weber? That's pretty good. My stock carb is like that but my Weber was a nightmare at 10,000'. I had to run choke all the way over engineers pass (the electric choke died on my Weber so I got the old man-a-fre manual choke conversion back in the day...amongst my many attempts at getting that Weber dialed).

Thanks for the input guys, if I can find a few I'll take them with me just in case. I don't mind tinkering with it but I'd hate to drag it up there and not have it work.

REZARF - No regrets on the Weber... yet. :D

Weber Woes

Now we know why guys like TBI conversions or Holley 350's with "high altitude power valves" installed. Both choices automatically compensate for altitude---just saying!!!

Not me Downey - After venturing to the dark side with a Weber and pulling my hair out for two years trying to 'dial' it, I went with a non-US factory carb and have been in love with it for over ten years at all altitudes. Mr. Toyoda really had the intake system for the 2F figured out (without all the emissions crap that is). The Italians and the Americans make fine carbs for some applications, but certainly not for the 2F in my experience. My 22R was fantastic with a Weber and my old Beetle was pretty happy with them, but my 2F runs like a perfectly oiled sewing machine with the stock carb.
