Hey folks:

When I installed my 13BT I did not hook up the water separator thinking that the extra inline filter I installed would do the same thing. I'm getting more smoke than I would like at start up (white/white-blue) and was thinking that it might be water in the fuel. I plan to hook up the water separator ASAP, but want to make sure I can do so without worrying about the electrical connection. I don't have an indicator light (its an FJ) and don't feel like wiring one in at this time. I'm thinking that the separator functions without this connection--is this correct?

Might there be another explanation for the smoke? It's been fairly mild so I don't think it's temps.

Thanks.

Uh, anyone out there? Did I forget deodorant?

the light is just to let you kow when the water level is high and in need of draining. you can run the seperator with out the elec conections with no problem. just drain it once a year... that is more than most people drain theirs...

Sorry. Got a little freaked out by another post about ruining the injectors and injector pump if water is in the line. All good things come to those who wait...

Thanks, Wayne! On it goes.

Matt: You could also use something like Howes Diesel Treat with each tank of fuel as an extra measure of precaution. Not only does it add lubricity to the fuel, but it also encapsulates any water in the fuel and never allows it to touch sensitive components like the injectors. I use a couple of ounces of Howes in a tankful in the summer, and double that in the winter in my rig.

Use it if you got it. Soon. You don't want water in your injection pump.

Dave

Thanks for all the info guys! I'll get her hooked up today.

Seriously, do what Stone said (make sure it has an anti-algant in it). If you think there is any chance of water in the fuel. I can tell you from experience that it really sucks to get rid of the diesel dose. If you are running an emulsifier (like Howes) you won't trap any water in the separator it'll all run through the engine, trapped (and safe) in the fuel.

Also, swap your fuel filter and cut the old one open to see what's inside. If you have black in there, you're doomed to a life of diesel antibiotics.
