New noise in engine compartment of my 77 FJ40:

Took a 29 mile drive this morning, 45mph through local pecan orchards. Popped the hood when we got home and took the video.

What I noticed:
engine temp didn't reach the halfway mark
the fan is spinning with a slight wobble

Suspect #1 is water pump

Please give it a listen and what it sounds like to you.

The video is listed as private. When you grab the fan does it wobble? If so the pump is likely bad.

Oops, sorry about that. Just now changed it to Unlisted. Hope that works, if not I have one more option. God, I am so new to this video world of YouTube. I'll grab the fan in the morning and report. Thanks!

Mine mostly run at that spot on the gauge. Stereo can help identify location of noise (your ears) mono from the computer speakers not so helpful.

You have the shaft into the water pump - if its real loose good chance it will be now or soon leaking out of the weep hole.
Then you have the pulley and fan end. Not a fan of those fan clutches. Check the bolts for tightness, wiggle pulley and fan separately.

I hear some ticking - check your valve lash. While cover is off, fire it up and watch the rockers. I had #1 E rocker pivot on the shaft instead of just rotate on a used engine I bought. I think it sounded like yours but that was back in like 2005. Shaft was worn on the bottom allowing it to pivot sideways. New to me rockers and shaft fixed that issue.

I hear two types of sounds that bother me, the first one is the rattling, possibly a bad bearing somwhere...maybe loose hardware...possibly the throwout bearing bad, pressure plate loose(probably not but still give it a check). The other is the ticking...what Charlie said.
Also check the fan clutch, I think if the shaft on the water pump was loose, it would probably be leaking.

Just checked the fan - solid, no wobble. Later today I'm gonna remove both belts from the water pump pulley and check the fan again.

Removed belts before lunch. This is what I found:

Fan is firmly attached to the pulley. Pulley, and I assume the pump shaft, are kinda wobbly, and some antifreeze leaked out the mount while I was wiggling the fan.
Time to order a new pump?

Before I order a new water pump assembly and a tube of FIPG, is there anything else I will need?

How old are the belts?
At least 5 years old, when I bought it. When I remove the broken water pump I'll inspect them closely.

While we're waiting for the replacement pump to arrive, how about some forensic "before" pics? First one was taken after removing the fan, clutch and pulley:

My biggest fear was that the bolts might be frozen and break. Turns out I had loosened and replaced 3 of them 5 years ago, so they all came out easy peasy.
Second pic is the water pump, the original I think:

The shaft is no longer snug, and turns with difficulty - bearing gone bye bye. Third pic was taken after I cleaned out the inside of the pulley:

There is a deep groove inside the backside of the pulley, where I found and scraped that heap of crud out. Last pic is of everything scraped clean, ready for installation:

Questions? Comments? Tips? Now's the time to speak up!

I like to rub grease at neck before installing the hoses. Check cracks on belts I bend the belt opposite of how they are normally installed. If they old replace them regardless. Good insurance. And I use distilled water with antifreeze and use antifreeze tester. Some folks use 50/50 and call it good. And I have bad habit of collecting bad parts. In some countries you could actually buy a repaiar kit to rebuild your original water pump. And of course I check for loose belts and hardware after driving it. Several days later I do it again. And most importantly and obviously check for leaks. While you are there check heater hose for cracks. They are cheap so I usually buy several feet and replace them. And again they are cheap and good insurance.

I'm in the process of repairing a waterpump for sa200 lincoln welder. So I asked him if they repaired land cruiser water pumps and his response was, yes the older the better. So here's the link...another option for those the want to rebuild instead. They may even sell a kit.....just saying. It's out Houston, Commercial Water Pump Rebuilders

Hey, thanks for the link! The pump I ordered arrived Saturday, and turns out it's for 80+ w/oil cooler  Have to return it, so found one at CityRacer and ordered today. In the meantime, prepared for winter with a new hrater control valvw:

I'm glad you found one. City racer is a great vendor. I purchased 16" stealies a while back. Anyhow, the person I was dealing with, asked for picture of the water pump before he could say if he had a rebuild kit or if he actually rebuild it. He also mentioned sometimes the the may have a casting number to help I D it. After seeing the pic, he said i could rebuild it myself or send it in and get a replacement. So I may send it in instead of repairing it since I don't have a press.

Here is another tip. If have a heater a behind the seat take it apart, make sure the armature part that rub against the brush look good. If looks a rough put on the drill and lightly rub aa file to clean up. Should a couple of seconds. And lube it and make it spins easily. If you never taken it take pictures when disassembled it.
I have found lent, dirt, and after several hours of use they will start screeching or lock up. Switches can also taken apart cleaned a relubed.

Got this yesterday:

Looks like the right one. First thing imma gonna do is apply a light coat of FIPG to the backside:

So, use that black line as the guideline for the pump side (left) and the plate (right) and install the 3 phillips screws, right?
EDIT UPDATE

Is applying the FIPG to the water pump body, both sides of the gasket with the black line, and the backing plate overkill?
