So I’ve been hearing an intermittent belt squeal for about 6 months. I tightened up all my belts this fall and heard nothing until today, when the squeal came back LOUD, along with a burning rubber smell. I think my WP has frozen. Evidence:

1) the WP pulley does not spin. This is where the squeal is coming from. The belt is getting pulled through the pulley and is burning against it. Tension feels correct but the belt looks in poor shape.

2) after about 5-10 min of driving and idling once the squeal began, the temp gauge began to creep up. I cut the engine before it peaked.

However, there is no coolant leaking. I can’t get my hands in to turn the pulley and feel for seizure unless I remove the fan shroud and belts. Is there any other way to determine my hunch is correct?

Also:

I ordered an Aisin WP. I assume this is the closest I’ll get to OEM. Is that the best available? I only want to do this job once.

I ordered a replacement fan clutch. Can’t tell if mine is shot, but thought to have one on hand. Are these typically replaced with the WP?

My FSM seems to suggest I can replace the WP by just removing the fan shroud but not the whole radiator, is that right? What’s the trick to getting the fan shroud off? The fan itself won’t allow the shroud out. Can I first remove the fan with the 4 nuts that hold it to the pulley, or should I just pull the radiator?

You don't need to remove the radiator just drain your system down, remove the fan, clutch, hoses and water pump. Then remove the shroud and research how to split it horizontally, you will appreciate it some day down the road.
Getting the shroud out whole is a pain, putting it back in after the split ill go so much easier.

You can take the belts off one at a time and eliminate potential noise makers.

Yes water pump has seized. Water pump normally spins with ease. Yes follow the advice by @ff347.
I never split my shroud. Some guys swear by it though. It’s not that hard to remove in one piece, just some stuff needs to be unbolted first to get at all the bolts.

any time i do any land cruiser or other toyota vehical water pump i always replace the thermostat with a OEM toyota one , cheap insurance and insures the fresh flow strength has a place to well ........go ..

and well this in one reason to do it as preventive maintence too

It’s a good time to replace any old hoses too.

Yeah, so can someone point me to a hood thread that lists all the WP-associated hoses and hopefully their Gates and Dayco interchange part numbers? I know I can get whole kits from some of the vendors here, but a few of the hoses have already been replaced so I prefer buying a la carte, at my local parts store if possible.

if you are changing all the hoses, it is about 20? pieces total
