Water Crossings downtown...

Lots of rain here today. We don't have the best rain sewer systems around, and the main access road to my neighborhood floods with about 18" of water whenever we get rain like this.

Usually I just take the 'back' way into our neighborhood, higher streets- they don't flood like the main road does.

But it never fails, some idiot in a small car tries to make it across. Today it was a newer black Camry, pretty nice car. Water half way up to the door handles, well past the bottom door sill. I'd hate to see what that will look like on the inside!

Anyway, after extending the breathers this weekend- I felt a little more adventerous! Hey, I've got 33's on a LAND CRUISER! I'm invinciable!

So I plowed in... at the deepest spot the cruiser definately sounded more like a motorboat than a truck as the exhaust was submerged. Wow, that was fun. When I got home I was looking for excuses to go back up the the store to get groceries, just to go through the lake again! Maybe I should have pushed the camry out of the way...

The only thing that makes me just a little nervous about deep water crossings in flooded streets is that I've seen manhole covers lift off during floods. I'd hate to drop a wheel in a manhole

The wifey brought up a good point while I was gloating... How deep can a snorkeled cruiser go in without adversely effecting the electronics?

I had mine sunk in the hawg lot at Lance's about 6" below the door handles. No snorkel.... clutch fan throwing water and howeling.... beavers swimming by... (OK I made that up)

after sitting stationary for 15 minutes or so, I started taking on a lot of water (mud really...stinky mud...)

I was fine although I haven't had my carpet back in since

I *think* the major electronics you have to worry about are inside the truck. So... your OK as long as you make sure the guy in front of you is actually OVER the beaver dam first and you don't have to wait stationary.

I did need to replace the contacts in the starter after that.... might be coincidence.

No factory lockers here...mine are ARB, but I still think you could get it out in just 4wd.

Photoman, is there anything left on your truck that you have not modified in some way? What did you seal the starter with before the breathers?

I've had mine sunk pretty good. Luckily, the water inside the cab came within only about 1/8" away from the ecu, otherwise it would have really sucked. After that, I took apart every electrical connection I could and waterproofed it best I could.

Junk - Actually nothing. I had water on the hood (bow wave) and half way up the doors and never had a problem with the stock starter after that. It's just when I took the starter out for the contact replace I saw the little rubber factory breathers on there and decided what the hey, extend them. Probably fine for 99 percent of things but I figured if I ended up sitting in water for awhile it would make it's way in the starter and solenoid. Now probably if I end up sitting in water for awhile, it will still make it's way in the starter.

I've driven through flooded areas in Colorado and I think that scared me more than being blown off an icey road at about 80mph crossing Wyoming.

No! That is how fast the wind was pushing him! In Southern Wyoming the winds are fierce. Not too many places where they have wind socks on the side of the road. Arghhh! I miss Wyoming!
