I was only there once but if I remember there was some soul food place right outside the Mall area that was good and famous, I know not remembering the name is useless to you though and it was 30 years ago.

Thanks, dude. That is super helpful. I will just go to the Mall and follow black people who are older than 30 around until I find it.

..lol..

Are you currently in DC or gathering info before the move?

post suggestions up. All over town. Thanks.

High End:

Downtown Washington DC Restaurants & Georgetown Fine Dining - Michel Richard Citronelle
mini bar
Rasika Restaurant
Vidalia Restaurant in Washington, DC
Kinkead's Restaurant, Washington, DC American Brasserie

Best Pizza:

http://www.pizzeriaparadiso.com/

Best Burger:

Ray's Hell-Burger - Does not have a Web site, located in Arlington

If you are interested in a particular type of ethnic food or something in a particular area let me know.

Edit, I just noticed the "lunchtime" in the title. Many of those probably don't do lunch but check the Web site as they may. Ray's is definitely open for lunch.

I'd heard of Ray's. I appreciate the suggestions. I'm definitely looking for lunch time stuff: sandwiches, burgers, ethnic foods. Anything I shouldn't be missing. Preferably accessible by Metro.

There's a local magazine/newspaper that should have a restaurant guide...

Here's one: Washington, DC Restaurant Guide - DC Restaurant Reviews and Details on washingtonpost.com

not to be snarky, but there's been an incredible rate of turnover in restaurants out here locally (1/2 my lunch places are gone.) so you kinda need current info, cause even some iconic places are just gone.

Atticus if you are in the mood for a burger try five guys, they are all over the place in DC

They have Five Guys in Birmingham. It is okay. I mean, there are ten thousand places to eat. I'm looking for places that I will be missing out on if I don't go there.

Ethnic food, go to Kabob Palace in Arlington, there are too right next door to each other, go to the authentic cabby stop. Get the boneless chicken, Kubbedah, chick peas and rice. I wouldn't have ever tried it but once you do, it is addicting.

Since we're on this, I've just arrived at my Holiday Inn in the historic district south of Reagan airport (Old Town North?). 20-some hours to kill, what to do that doesn't cost much $? I might be able to score a ride on the hotel shuttle van, otherwise I'm on foot.

You're probably in Old Town Alexandria, you can walk down King st, to the water good food and drinks down there, head up to the Masonic Temple for a tour, jump on the King st metro and go downtown, Smithsonian is all free, all the monuments are free, lots to do downtown DC.

Thanks Scott. I usually jog north on the Potomac from here, good running but not much to visit. I'll try running south today to see what's on the waterfront there. Oronoca Bay Park, Founders Park, Waterfront Park, all south.
