Washington, D.C., lunchtime eats

I ran south, looked like plenty of places to eat and hang out. Heavy police presence, like two cars at the end of each street ending at the water. Another under the bridge, looked like he was asleep though. I don't think I was supposed to be running under the bridge there, but the gate was open and unmarked so I followed the trail. Why so many cops? Normal for DC?

Well DC has always been known for violence and crime. Christ the farking Mayor used to smoke crack.

This looked like a pretty safe area: well maintained, nice cars, marinas, newish waterfront condos.

I'm not exactly sure how my DC food thread in the food section of MUD became Scott's "Most Dangerous Game"/jogging thread, but thanks for posting.

It's a sub-forum of chat, therefore subject to the same standards of chattiness, counselor.

And I was scouting for eats during my run, that's why I ran south per recommendations here.

just you wait until trollhole gets ahold of it...

Thanks Scott. I usually jog north on the Potomac from here, good running but not much to visit. I'll try running south today to see what's on the waterfront there. Oronoca Bay Park, Founders Park, Waterfront Park, all south.

In keeping with the rambling nature of this thread, I used to bus tables at the Ramada Inn Olde Towne North. I worked breakfast and lunch, so if Atticus wanted to see where I worked in 1984, then that would be a great place for him to go to lunch.

Everything in Olde Towne is Olde, Scott. You're supposed to walk around and appreciated it's olde-ness.

The eateries along The Strand and Strand Street looked pretty new to me, new boardwalks, stores, condos and stuff. Probably weren't there in '84. Torpedo Factory, Chart House, Starbucks, Waterfront Gourmet, some fancy rowing clubs.

Via the miracle of Google maps I have determined that the Ramad is now the Crown Plaza and that Holiday Inn is kitty-corner from the building where I used to live.

The Torpedo Factory was there in my day, but it looks like they've added some waterfront development in front of it. torn down some warehouses and put in townhouses or condos or who knows.

The olde stuff is a few blocks in from the water.

I threw up in Atlantis in Alexandria, Va when I was somewhere between three and five years old. It was unrelated to the food quality, however.

Not sure if you have already visited but I finally had some time to compile you a list of spots I know are open for lunch and near Metro rail.

If on Capital Hill you can see this great seafood place from Union Station.
* Johnny's Half Shell - Seafood Specialties, Strong Drinks *

This place is on the other side of the Hill near the Supreme Court and serves good burgers. Don't be put off that it is owned by a former Top Chef contestant. While not as good as Ray's Hell burger it beats the other burgers on the Hill. Good Stuff Eatery - This is Good Stuff. You can walk to Ray's from the Courthouse Metro stop, about 3 blocks.

If you are near Dupont Circle and want some Greek food head here. Zorba’s Cafe If you are in Dupont and feel like Pizza don't miss http://www.pizzeriaparadiso.com/

If you find yourself on U Street and want some real good soul food from a literal hole in the wall place go here. Oohhs & Aahhs
1005 U St., NW
Washington, DC 20001
Phone: 202-667-7142
Also on U Street is Ben's Chili Bowl which is a DC legend. The "Half Smoke" from Ben's is DC's official food. :: Bens Chili Bowl :: Home Expect a line out the door at lunch time.

Most all of the best ethnic places are out in the close in MD and VA suburbs and not really Metro accessible. Think Thai, Vietnamese, Burmese/Malaysian, Ethiopian, Lebanese, Chinese, Afghan/Persian, Peruvian Rotisserie chicken, etc.

I purposely left out anything on the K Street corridor as there are fine dining places but they are mostly Meh food aimed at the lobby crowd.

Please let me know what you think if you end up at any of my recommendations.

Thanks, dude.

FYI, BLT near Farragut West is pretty good.

Mr. P's Rib and Fish, Greek Deli on 19th St, Amsterdam Falafelshop on NW 18th St.

The 3 major lunch highlights from my stay in DC.

How did you find Mr. P's Rib and Fish? There is no way in hell you were sightseeing in that area. I was going to include Amsterdam Falafel but figured it would be too much of a hike from Dupont or Cleveland Park Metro. I forgot about Greek Deli! I used to work across the street from Zorba's so they are my go to Greek at lunch.

There's got to be some canadians up there that know how to cook pork. You're welcome for all of that help.

I was visiting some friends going to school in DC for two weeks. They drug me all over town showing me dives and great places to eat, those were the lunch joints that stuck out as either really freaking good or great bang for the buck. DC has some really good food, the melting pot culture kicks ass.

I know it from Atlanta, but I believe there is a Fogo de Chau in DC. It's not really lunch, but it's by far the best churrascaria I've been to. The meat is to die for, and although it is expensive, if you go hungry you very easily get your money's worth. Fxxx I love that place.
