Looking good spressomon!

Can you measure how much room you have between the inside of the frame rail to the winch on each side?

Also measure the distance from the back of the winch to the radiator area?

The distance between the TJM frame plate mounts is 29.5". This width is not effective with my bumper since the TJM winch adapter plate needs to be supported on the outside corners...which, because of these two brackets, reduce the overall useable width. The frame crossmember, which supports the radiator, is only 1" farther back than the top of the winch drum cross-supports.

Thanks Spressomon. I just wanted to see what the gap measurements were!

Why would you want to? I am just not sure if this bumper or the ARB saharah? give enough protection. The main reason of ours is to protect from deer! Same will be the case with our new car.

I want that model bumper but I hate the shiny bling. If I can unbolt it, I can powdercoat or something?

We don't hit many deer here in San Diego:)

Is that "little" 9.5 gonna be enough to move that rig when/if you need to? If you're in a position where you have to straight pull with 20cu/yds of mud or sand under a +6000lb rig, that is approaching the upper capacity of that winch. I've seen plenty of older planetary Warns go up in smoke with less of a load. I have reservations about the M12000 being enough for my rig when it's finished. It's better to have too much than not enough in that situation.

The 9.5xp is actually 500lbs more pull capacity than the winch plate is designed to handle. I spoke to Warn and they, FWIW, told me the 9.5xp is very conservatively rated. And with the 6hp motor probably capable of delivering more pull than advertised. Whether that is really accurate or not: Who knows. The 12K winch would have certainly been better however, even with a 100% margin of pull capacity there are still situations that even the 12K would not be enough. Then there is the issue of available physical space for a larger winch. So, based upon my intended usage for this vehicle I think the 9.5xp will be fine.

I'm sure you're right. From what I hear, the new Warns are a far cry from the old planetary smokers. Personally I've seen one too many W9000s and W8000s take a dump to buy anything other than Superwinch. I have an X9 and a Husky10 on the 90 and Disco respectively for almost the last 10 years. Even the X9, with not being serviced as much as it should be, just keeps pulling. Slowly, but keeps pulling. Not that I'm bashing Warn. I've seen the 8274, M12000, and M15000 work all day and barely get warm. Much respect for those as they've saved my behind plenty of times.

:) I understand the no deer in SD. But they can help in auto accidents as well. Only thing I am still a little unsure about is that the t-15 is not air bag compliant.

How strong is the Sahara or T-3C TJM vs. the regular ARB or the t-15 TJM?

Keep up the good work!

I really wanted the Husky...but no where near enough room behind this bumper!

Kneel,

I'm sure Spresso has a snatch block and understands mechanical advantage;)

Heck, he could do a triple line pull with two snatch blocks...

Right?

89srule the ARB bar is airbag compliant.
i've got some hopefully better quality images of my deluxe bar attached which might give you an idea of colour coding, although i had to compress them a bit
cheers

Yup...and with the fastest line pull of any Warn (other than the 8274) the 9.5xp with double/triple block won't be TOO slow...or at least that's the hope!

Peter,
Thanks for those pics, that looks very nice. Did you have to get that painted yourself somewhere? Which ARB model is that? And what issues/non-issues would airbag compliant vs. non-complaint? Is it just paying for the testing or?

Just remember to get stuck in a convienient location with a short recovery distance where you can hook a single block to, let alone 2 or 3... ;p

ARB will do it for you. It cost me $220 extra to get done which is their standard price for colour coding. They just grabbed the paint code of the LC and organised it to be done. The bar itself is the ARB Deluxe Winch Bar...i have the catalogue at home and will post their part number later if you like. They advertise it as being compatible with the air bag system.

You can't (practically anyway) prepare 100% for every recovery situation. However you can mitigate the risk for most circumstances. Carrying syn winch line extension is lightweight insurance if/when you need that long distance anchor along with pullpal in non-forested areas, etc. If we applied logic to the lowest level of risk we would either all have to buy brand new rigs or stay at home...

Here's a couple pics of the completed install. The second shot is from the top looking down behind the bumper at the top of the winch...

Moooooooo...oooooooo -

Do you find with the weight of the winch that the bar vibrates any more on corrugated tracks? I'm concerned because the deluxe bar has the winch cradle built on the front of the bumper (like the 80 Series bars) and is not attached directly to the frame, like on the TJMs or even some of the standard ARB bars for the 100 Series.

Thanks,

Thanks,
The bar vibrates, but no more than expected. I actually just got back from a drive on some logging tracks only a couple of hours ago and i had the driving/spot lights on as it's getting dark earlier here as we get closer to winter.
The lights were fine in that they didnt really vibrate (apart from when the whole car was vibrating ) over corrugations and i was actually quite happy with that.

I did go down some very steep tracks and bottomed out on the r/h mounting point of the bar in a deep rut (where the track i was on joined the main track), but i would have hit anyway on the stock bar.

I made the mistake of going up a track i hadnt been on before and i think i've scratched the cr@p out of the car (the noise was not sounding good) due to overgrown trees and shrubs, but it would have been a bit worse without the bar i think.

I'll have to wait until daylight to see how bad it is :(
cheers
peter

This is a shot from the side...i have a full load of petrol in this shot but i have had this forward lean since new so the extra weight of the ARB bar didn't make much difference:
