Doing a TB using the Aisin kit on my 2001 that ran great before I started the TB job and running into something I have not encountered before. When I set it to 0/TDC at the crankshaft, the right/#2 camshaft pulley aligns perfectly, but the left/#1 is off slightly. It’s about 5/16”, about a tooth roughly and appears to have skipped a tooth. I don’t know when the PO did it last or if it was done correctly, so I am unsure how it happened.

That said, how should I proceed here? Pics show the crankshaft at TDC, the right side aligned and 3 pics of the left side.

Its off a little but you are going to fix this anyways. Proceed as normal. When you are ready line the marks up as close as you can get them and put the belt on. The lines on the new belt will set you free! Good luck!

Edit, I read more carefully this time. You're in the middle of the job. Just cut the belt off or remove the tensioner and take it off like a real mechanic, then turn the timing pulleys however the hell you want bc it's non-VVTI baby. Try to break something, you can't do it. Ok kidding a little, but just move the timing pulleys where you need them to be (cheap china s*** wrench from amazon makes this easy) then follow the directions in the aisin kit, check it buy rotating the crank pully TWO FULL REVOLUTIONS, finish on tdc, and the other two marks should line up, if not, do below.

Remove the tensioner (if you messed up and already installed it), see if that gives you enough slack in the belt to turn the timing pulley one tooth to the right while the belt "slips" that one tooth. Mark the belt where it is now so you can be sure the belt slipped one tooth. If you need more slack turn the left timing pulley slightly but don't allow the belt to "slip" on that one. Reinstall tensioner. Turn the crank pulley twice back to TDC. Good to go.

You non-VVTi guys run those belts until they are about dust!

With the belt off, adjust the cam slightly so it all lines up, then slip the belt on, lining up all the belt marks.

As others have said it would be fine to correct the timing with the new belt. It is odd to find however if the truck was running fine before.

My assessment is that it's far from a whole tooth off. More like about 1/3 to 1/2 tooth which judging by the condition of that belt,
(the worst I've seen!) could add up in wear as you go all the way around.
I also think that when you get your new parts on there everything will line up okay.

After looking again at the first pic , My mistake, It does look like a whole tooth but I'd still just do the job and put it all back correctly.
You are doing a water pump and pulleys aren't you?

i've done two that were 1 tooth off, they ran "fine" but ran way better with the new belt and correct timing. If it was because of belt stretch then the left side would be worse then the right.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I am doing everything, using the Aisin kit TKT-021. Also replacing the tensioner/pulley and the fan bracket.

Yea, that belt is bad, glad I can provide a "what the..." factor on that :) No record of the PO doing it and the Carfax and Toyota history records do not show it either. And no sticker.
