Hi everyone...

I will probably buy this used Warn 8274 winch. the owner says it's a model from 2000.
The freespool handle is not original, and he says it was rebuilt by the distributor on 2003.
Is this an 8274 or an 8274-50??
Is the motor the 2.5HP or the 4.6HP version

is it a good idea to remove the top cover with the motor to see how the internals are? or they are less likely to be damaged?
What other things should i check?

Thanks all!

It's definitely a later solenoid pack. If you get the serial # and email Warn, they will tell you when it was built. That thing is amazingly rusty for a 6 year old winch. Mine is from 1990 and looks 20 times better. Given that this one has likely been parked outside and in the salt, if you buy it, I would definitely split the case and change the oil and look at the condition of the gears. Why was it "rebuilt" already? Given the rust and the rebuild, I would keep looking unless this one is very cheap. My guess is that it has been abused. If you buy it cheap, the whole thing can be rebuilt-do a search for the details-I think it was Russmanix?? that just went through it.

There is a date code on the tag. IIRC the number in the middle is the last digit of the mfg year, starting with 0 in 1980. If it works, I wouldn't fool with it.

Pin-Splitting the winch case is easy. I don't see why he wouldn't at least want to change the oil in the gear case. Mine had about 2 oz of this ugly, brown funk that may have been oil at one time, but I'm glad I changed it. In my opinion-Warn should have a drain and fill plug for a once per year purge.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" appeals to me because I am a little lazy and there is always something else broke.

It is pretty easy to pop the top half off, so take a peek, especially if it shows signs of leaking oil.

Best thing to do when winch shopping is make a few hard pulls with it, that will tell you more about it than anything.

Just give it a straight pull with the parking brake partially engaged.

FWIW, I rebuilt mine top to bottom, and I love it!

For $150 and about a days time, you can make that thing practically brand new if the motor and solenoids are all ok. I would say go for it.

X2. I bought one that looked great, cable almost new looking. When I split the top case off, it was full of water. I just bead blasted everything, put a lower housing kit and a brake kit on it and had the motor tested. You never know what is inside unless you look. And I never disagree with Charlie, 'cept this once;)

my 8274-50 says so on the tag........

Looks alot older than the one I just bought and I'm sure that mine is over 10 years. Warn confirmed that mine is "old". I'm about to purchase the clutch assembly (warn only sells it as a unit now) since my clutch pin is bent. I currently have the round handle but the new one will ook like your handle.

Looks older than the one I bought 12 years ago; and it was a rebuilt by the local dealer. I gave $350 for it and it has been great. If the motor is ok, it can be rebuilt if needed. For comparison, retail on a new one is like $1k the last time I asked the dealer.
