Guys,

Looking at buying an 8274 from an individual, but am a little concerned about something. The pictures I got of it show the right side of the winch housing(looking head- on) is off of it and laying on top of the box. Does the housing on the side of the winch come off? I obviously don't know anything about the 8274 mechanics/housing, etc. but do know that it's the winch I want but I don't want to make a big mistake buying something that isn't quite right. I cannot post pics. as the owner is using a picture format that is not allowing me to post. If it would help to see pics (I'm sure it would) then give me the O.K. to send them to your PM and I'll forward them. Pics are worth 1000 words. Thanks in advance. :)

open the photos in http://www.irfanview.com and then resize/resave them as a jpg to upload into the forum.

And yes, the mount-plate opposite the motor/gear side just "sits" on there...

yeah it justs like Woody says. The side plate(if looking at front on the right) in only held on by the 2 bolts that go thru the front of the bumper, the winch itself just slide into it. I can see why you asked.

Thanks Poser, Landpimp, and Woody. Looks like I'm going to go ahead and pick it up. :D

Another typical US bit of agricultural junk we have to fix when we use them here.....

Yes they just sit there, but we add bars to adjust the end plate for easy free wheeling, and to stop the cable jumping over the end plate and jamming, as well as afew other mods to bring the high mount up to speed.

Here is a quick blurb of mine someone psoted, with some pics of my old winch.

shed guy...

What is it again that Au has to offer in this market, other than sass and pretentiousness.

How about something new to add, instead of spewing this trash..

Oh, and nice clear pics..

Oh, I forgot...thanks!

You are welcome!

Should give you years of trouble-free service, contrary to what that upsidedown boy has to say about them...

Well,
we have a 2 speed hyd unit, made and designed here, 15000lb, no bigger than a 9000 l/m.

But why re invent the wheel, when we can fix the crap you guys make cheaply and easily.....

As much as I hear about the Aussie's having issues with the winch, and as rarely as I hear of it in the states, I can only assume one thing...

operator error lol

I've yet to have one problem with my old Bellevue or with my 8274-50, and while it doesn't go thru competition grade use, I certainly push it to the limits on most trips out. (granted, I'm not "in the bush" for weeks on end either...)

I've had an 8274 for 25 years. Used it high and low and never had a problem with overheating or with the cable jumping the spool.

Do you guys winch 3-8 cable lengths often?

And you also need to watch, when winching, and driving, which you have to do, and when the ground is rocky, muddy steps etc, as the car "pops" over, if the cable gets any slack, this is when it will jump the end plate.

The brass bushings inside are only cinted bronze too, we replace them with brass, as most Uassie wagons with the family are around the 3 tonne, not 1.5t rock buggies.... :flipoff2:

Also, the front mounting needs the adjuster bars, to get the plates aligned to free wheel properly, not to mention the motor when it gets hot, then when you fire the cable abck in the hot armiture wiring throws out, and rubs on the coms, causing aproblem, thats why the armiture is overlayed with a nylon.

Also water ingress is a big problem, so we o ring the end plates, fit fill and drain plugs, trips like my last one over xmas, we did over 100 river and creek crossings in 10 days, and the winch doesnt like water in it.

Heres a trip report, with pic page links down the page.

My old Bellevue works great every time without mods. I do like the way you crossbolt the end plate though. I live in the desert so water isn't much of an issue but I do have the grease fitting. This is big J**P country so I get plenty of practice pulling others. Also use it to add boulders if necessary to spice-up a trail.

You sure like to bag on the american stuff but I bet nothing else you have is stone stock and unmodified. Take your cruiser for example. I'd say there is nothing wrong with improving an already good thing. 8)

Well, I bag US stuff because the build quality of anything US we get here sucks, yes I improve other things, and I always thought Aus was a dumping ground for the crap stuff you guys make, till I visited and realised that you make everything the same as we get, not just what you send us.

Jusat ask any toyota dealer what sort of comebacks they have on build quality for the US made tecoma, compared to other models, the F series trucks [only in america would you put abs on drum brakes....] with the US panel fit and paint quality, the j**p...... its a classic exsample of US know how ::) the ford explorer, the ford taurus, the dodge ram [BIG POS] The rancho shock, the Warn winch, the CHEV GEN 3 LS1 5.7 oil burner....

Be buggered if Id hop in a bloody re usable space ship built in the US, after seeing how they do other forms of transport..... :flipoff2:

:D Shedguy,I'm laughing with you for sure. I've had a hardon for the US auto industry for a long time. I just don't believe we have our priorities straight. I'm just amazed at the fanfare and pomp and ceremony we invest every year in advertising "new" models. It's hype as far as I'm concerned.

We smother our vehicles in plastic and gizmos. We can't even leave the driveway without a cell phone and a navigation system and an entertainment center.

I may be looking around for a late model commuter car or small truck soon. I don't need all the garbage. I just want a cool ride that is tough and dependable and fuel efficient. And that doesn't have my knees changing channels on the stereo for lack of leg room. Is that too much to ask?

And I admit my 8274 doesn't see the same duty as yours. Mostly a weekender, homeowner kind of a thing with me. I kept a copy of your pic in case I start having problems. But I guess I need stronger reading glasses; seems kind of blurry :flipoff2:

cheers
