Warn 8274 brake (how does it work) (1 Viewer)

I recently had to do some repairs to my 8274 and in the process I rebuilt my brake. I'm not sure if the brake ever worked, or how it's supposed to function when it does work properly. What is the brake for? Please excuse my ignorance. Can someone enlighten me please?

The reason you want a brake is to hold the load securely in place. All of our winches are rated to hold the full maximum capacity of the winch. It's a safety thing.

As to how it works, it's a cam-actuated deal. When the drum begins to roll back, it activates the cams which squeeze the brake against the spur gear to hold it in place.

I'm sure someone here that's torn one of these apart could give a more ind-depth answer, but that's the short-and-dirty version as it was explained to me.
