Want FI small block chevy v8 swapp done, will pay good money for it, but not the 10k plus I've been quoted by some shops. I live in No. CA, but I use the truck for work all over the country so where ever the plce is, its not a problem for me.

$10,000 is not a bad deal at all if it is done right. Its a lot of work.

I did a 350 swapp into a 85 toy 4x4 pu a few years back and I droped about 5k tops and that was with a really stout small block and trans to back it up. Do most people keep the toy trans or GM unit?

with the 80's most keep the stock tranny.

not too many 1/2 ton rated American transmissions even compare.

Doesn't skyshark? have one for sale?

I'm thinking white shark not skyshark.....

Yep, thats who it was....sucks to have a lousy memory.

There are some competent shops around here (Cameron Park, CA) but the quotes i've received are in the $10k range as well, which i understand to be about two times the cost of a rebuilt stock 80 engine.

why go chevy v8 instead of a turbodiesel or a 4.7 toy v8? even with a rebuild, i'm sure the latter would be a cheaper option, especially with the abundance od turbodiesels now in canada.

cheap power,

you can get a running 350 for $129.26 from the junk yard, the accesories will be little more, if you want to rebuilt it more agian but rebuld parts bir a SBC are dirt cheap, much cheaper than a Toyota engine, expecially one that you have to source parts internationally.

but you get what you pay for

Im sure it cant be as hard as swapping in a 6bt Cummins. If you have all the nessary parts for the install, ( adapters, motor mounts, computer, etc ) it can be done in a day or two. If you need items to be fabbed up, and/or bought, it will take longer.

define abundances. there's maybe 200 1hdts in the whole country and 90% of them are in hdj81 that people paid big $ for. you could maybe get an importer up here to bring in a bad body condition hdj81, cut the frame and export it into the US for parts for maybe $8-10k. then you start the swap.

give a guy in Loma LInda Ca a call. I can't remember his name, but his shop is called On-Target on Redlands Blvd. I know he just did one of these for a buddy of his. (the V-8) No affiliation, just like the guy and I think he does good work.

The new style GM LSx engines ('98-current) are some of the best new school V8 fuel injected engines available. A 5.3i or 6.0i GM truck engine puts out good power and "economy" with individual coil packs per cylinder, great cylinder head port design, good flowing factory exhaust ports, great oiling system, advanced factory computer (totally tuneable) and other great attributes.

You need to realize if you do this swap as others have stated the factory transmission probably won't be the best fit. That means you need an engine/trans and transfer case with custom driveshafts.

If you can't afford $10K for this swap and can't do it yourself... then it simply isn't very realistic. There is a ton of labor involved in this.

Ask me how I know. I've built (2) GN powered RX-7's, my current LS1 powered RX-7, and am building an LS7 RX-7 right now. They take a lot of work to do it right.

Half assed you can do anything cheap, but if you want a reliable conversion with everything working it costs $$$ and lots of time.
