I just found an outfit that does small run rubber mfg without tooling costs. I sent off for a quote and hope to hear back soon, but beyond buying one set (my truck) I don't even have the slightest idea a) how many Fj55's there are out there or b) how many have wing vents in the door, let alone c) who would want a set to replace theirs.

Post if you have 'em and give an idea what you would pay per door/set for vent window rubber. I'm thinking $150-$200 per window wouldn't be out of the question but that's just me.

I'll follow up here once I hear back and we'll see if it's even feasible. End result might not even be usable, so we'll have to see where it goes.

I voted, but thought I would explain my opinion a bit.

I would guess that I would buy them eventually so long as they are "reasonably" priced and they fit. I know that Matt (Buckrouseau) bought some vent window rubber from TLC for his FJ45LV restoration and was very disappointed. He (or someone responding to his thread) also mentioned that someone on eBay is selling them for a FJ45 now for $40-50/side IIRC.

I say eventually because I would guess that would be one of the final things I do in my renovation of my FJ55 which is still a couple of years out.

Thanks Jeremy for taking the time and trouble to investigate this!!!

HTH,

The company requested 2D drawings with accurate dimensions which I'm going to do over the next week and then send them off. The guy doing the quote won't be back in the office until 6/29 so just FYI to check back after that for more info.

I would like a set. Not sure of 200 each but certainly 200-250 for a pair. I am about ready to paint my 55 and I would like to totally strip the doors and sandblast them but my rubbers are fair and I don't dare to take em off if I can not get another set

I would love a set, but not a $400.

Don't get me wrong... I would absolutely choke on the price I've mentioned, but I'm just trying to set expectations. Based on observation of sales for other rubber pieces, I'm guessing there won't be enough demand to justify tooling and such for this part. A big reason for this is the availability of alternate door styles which, to many, is a great alternative.

The company I'm talking to uses a process that doesn't require tooling. They actually machine the parts from CAD drawings which, especially on a part like this, takes time.

I'm guessing that even if every FJ55 owner with wing windows bought a set, we'd still only need maybe 50 sets. Do the math.
