Valuation of a 200 vs comparably priced SUV's?

So I'm curious as to the 200 series ability to hold value when compared to other SUV's in the same price range? For instance, buying a new 200 at 78K, one could buy a nice Porsche Cayenne/Range Rover/Mercedes etc. However, I feel like a 200 would hold value better than others at the same price range. Do you guys think this is true? Perhaps its the low production numbers when compared to a Range Rover where they make a ton of them.

My 16 year old 100 series did quite well, considering it needed work, and was 13 years older than when I bought it used at 3 years old.
 
Yes, the LC's hold value over similarly priced competitors (as do 4Runners, Tacos, etc). Just search out new and used prices on them...

I will definitely buy a 2-3 year old model once my need gets to be pressing. I'll try to hold out as long as possible. Maybe when the 2016 model comes down to the 60's then I'll jump in. There is just so many options you can buy when you're talking 50-70K, one must be a true die hard LC fan to buy one. I saw a 2016 model the other day and I immediately was like...he's a true enthusiast.

That's a good point, and an interesting way of looking at it (the part about how the competitive options go way up once you're in 50-70k vehicle market, and ya gotta be a die-hard LC fan at that price point).

The way I tend to look at it is that I'm in an $80k vehicle market...but a USED version of it...so I'm really shopping around $40, but get to enjoy the $80k vehicles. Did I spend $80k? Not even close. But I'm still driving an $80k tier truck. It's a win!
 
I don't understand how people can buy these brand new for $86K + tax ~$100k. With that much I can buy 3 used 200 Land Cruisers and BP-51s.

Thank goodness for the people that buy them new!!! I got my 2013 (via dealer) from someone who put 12,000 +/- miles on it...

It cost them at least $2.00 a mile to drive it.

The way I tend to look at it is that I'm in an $80k vehicle market...but a USED version of it...so I'm really shopping around $40, but get to enjoy the $80k vehicles. Did I spend $80k? Not even close. But I'm still driving an $80k tier truck. It's a win!

Bingo. Now, there are a variety of vehicles that are several years old that stickered at $80k and are now in the 40's, particularly German and British brands. Unlike those, however, I'm not sweating being out of the warranty period. So I feel like the 200 is somewhat unique in that as a used buyer you get the substantial luxury car depreciation from new without as much risk in maintenance and repair exposure. At least, that's what I hope!
 
I bought a 2014 under factory warranty for about 55K, 20K less than invoice and $30K less than MSRP

a 2008 or 2009 with under a 100K miles can be bought for anywhere between $35K and $40K depending on the vehicle and location.

So $20K reduction the first 1-2 years (From Invoice) and another $20K reduction for the next 6 years in total if I keep it in great shape.

Thats at least my quick view from what I paid and what I see for sale.

Thats the reason I picked a 1-2 year old one as the sweet spot buying one still under warranty in case there was an issue I did not catch in an inspection

While the objective cold hard economics is probably difficult to argue against I think maybe the truth is a bit more subjective, and varies depending on who you are and the way you view the world.

I bought mine new, cash down. After 4 or 5 LCs over the last 20 years I can't tell you the incredible thrill it gave me to own my first new cruiser.

Was the depreciation inflicted on me as I rolled off the lot worth it? Yeah. Think it was. Life is short.

Looking forward to my 300 - but doubt I will ever sell my 200 so any loss remains virtual. My bloody 21 year old son is already gleefully eyeing it up, the little bugger.

This is my opinion as well. I frankly don't care about the depreciation. I got what I wanted and what I wanted was new. It's only money.

I thought the same thing. Either they don't detail the cars before posting them, or this one was not well cared for, or both. It amazes me that someone would pay $80k for a car and not keep it clean.....

As @Canyonero said I wanted a new one so I got a new one. I'm a happy man.

Regarding depreciation I just sold my wife's 4Runner for $2k less than I paid for it 3 years ago. Do the math. "How do you like dem apples?"

I didn't look at the Carfax but given it's a 2013 it may have been leased.

Personally I'm not a fan of CarMax. I've looked at a couple other vehicles over the years and every time I'm underwhelmed with the conditioln. When I looked for an LC, they were overpriced (I could have purchased a similar one from another dealer within ~100 miles for less) and they get most of their vehicles from auction just like everyone else. Then again I like to research and haggle.
 
Even at 50K for a used 200...there are some nice SUV's you can buy brand new for 50K with 0 miles etc. I'm a die hard land cruiser fan and will pay the premium they demand just to have one. I think the best point that has been made here is that in the price range of a LC at least a LC you won't have to worry about being out of warranty. Whereas a Merc, Porsche RR etc. I'd be hesitant to own out of warranty. I'll probably break down and buy a 200 or the 2016 model (is it called 300?) when it's 2 years old. Yeah I'll spend 50-60K buying it but the confidence a LC gives me is worth it. Perhaps I'll buy a built 200 off the classifieds here for pennies on the dollar. That's prob the way to go. Range Rover's are beautiful but it's the cost of ownership that keeps me away.
