I apparently need a new Vacuum Actuator to engage and disengage 4x4 in my FJ40. It's a 1971 FJ40 with a converted engine and transmission ...which is now a 2B diesel engine and 4 speed tranny. Both taken from a 1981 BJ40.

Problem is I have no clue how that Vacuum Actuator looks like and can't seem to get any leads online for a new or used part.

I'm assuming I'll need the actuator to be a 1981 model, not 1971.

Would you any of you guys happen to know how this vacuum actuator looks like and perhaps where I could get one? Thanks very much!!

I have one, off a 1970 FJ40. Was working well when I took it off early in 2015 and converted it to a manual shift.

Can't say for 100% certain that it would fit but I believe it will. There are others here on MUD who will be able to give more specific information.

I bolted a '65 actuator to an '80 xfer case (non-split). Not sure if it would work on a split case. If you have a split case, and want vacuum 4WD shifting, I would look at an FJ62 vacuum shifter setup.

Anyone know what this part is called? Is this a vacuum actuator for engaging and disengaging the 4x4? I need it replaced as it broke in two. I believe it broke when the transfer case was being mounted after I restored my FJ40. The mechanic kept mum about it and just found out recently. Bastard. Anyway, just would like to go ahead and replace it. Anyone know where I can order one? It's the part I outlined in RED and it attaches to the Transfer case. Thanks in advance!

Is this what you are looking for? Came off of my '70 FJ40. Needs cleaning but and was working when removed.

The transfer case is from a 1981 BJ40. My FJ40 is a 1971 but the engine, transmission and transfer case was replaced with those from a 1981 BJ40. Therefore my engine is now a 2B diesel instead of an gas F engine. The transmission is now a 4speed as opposed to the original 3speed.

Parking Brake? Used TSMMFG.

Not sure what a TSMMFG is?

As for your vacuum shift you need a 8/80 and later style. Those bolt to the front and compared to the earlier one piece T case that bolts to the side. Only model in the US that used the vacuum shift on the 8/80+ split transfer case was the 88-90 FJ62. Looks like parts and the whole vacuum shift are still available new from Toyota. Price is about half of what I was quoted twenty years ago when the small piece that needed between the T case and vacuum got broke on my spare T/T. That piece is still only sold with the vacuum shift.:bang: I was able to buy a used vacuum for less then a 1/10th of what Toyota wanted back then. Yours could be something as simple as the diaphragm. Which is easy enough to replace.

Thanks Living ... that info is very helpful. Wasnt 100% sure what year it was from to begin with. Will scour around online for the part.
